well im a user of RenRen and im a Taiwanese who lives in Canada, my friends from Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia are all using RenRen, my cousins,relatives, classmates and theirs are all using RenRen from all around the world like England, Switzerland, USA, Brazil…..etc
there are countless Asian around the world.

@4d07ed7a94789948a09dec5f331cef33:disqus I’ll say a million times, RenRen is no Facebook or Baidu. If Facebook fails in China, and they probably will, they still have such a significant foothold in other countries that they’ll still be fine. What everyone seems to lose site of is that RenRen isn’t catching up to Facebook in any other market besides China, where they have an automatic advantage just by virtue of not being blocked.

And it’s more than language. Google left China after the conditions proved to be too unfavorable. When the government creates conditions that specifically suit domestic players, of course a foreign company isn’t going to catch up. None of which would stop another Chinese company from coming along with a product that gains favor more quickly. Right now, RenRen strikes me as the Chinese MySpace. There’s money to be made, people who get in (and out) at the right time will get rich, good bet for the short-medium term, but not the stock you’d want in your retirement fund.

Considering that my analysis is that they’re likely to make money, but not likely to achieve the same level of success as Facebook, I’d put money on my analysis if I knew you better.

Nearly everything about RenRen is fine as long as you *don’t compare them to Facebook* or use the “they’re the Chinese Facebook!” analogy. Particularly when it comes to growth rates, which pale significantly when compared to Facebook. Take the raw numbers out of it and look at active user retention. At LEAST half of Facebook’s users are active – many more in their home market. ONLY one quarter of RenRen’s users are active in their home market, and they don’t have a significant place in any other markets to balance that with.

Considering they’re making money from the time people spend on site, the fact that almost 75% of the people who sign up don’t stay active should be an indicator that this is *not* the Facebook equivalent some people make it out to be.

Again, my takeaway is that the company will make money, probably won’t be a bad investment, but they’re no Baidu, and definitely no Facebook.

@8cee3c18ef0fdcd681625b433824e880:disqus Hi, author here. Read the article carefully. I never suggested that RenRen wouldn’t do well, just that it’s not going to do as well as Facebook. You’re correct in that I don’t live in China, but it happens that I published a story about luxury brands expanding campaigns online to stay ahead of billboard advertisement regulation changes, so I wouldn’t say I’m totally clueless about the role of social media in China.

RenRen – as mentioned in the final paragraph – will probably perform well for investors, but Facebook, whenever they IPO is going to do better. RenRen won’t achieve Facebook returns, growth or numbers unless they make some fundamental business shifts, but that doesn’t mean the stock won’t make money.
