It’s Finally Over! Mahut and Isner Wimbledon Match Breaks Multiple Records

If you follow tennis, you may be aware of a match that’s taken slightly less time to complete than a reading of War and Peace. June 24th will be a day forever engraved in the minds of tennis players John Isner (US) and Nicolas Mahut (France). These two tennis champions had little clue on June 22nd that were starting what would become the longest match in their lives. Lasting a record shattering 11 hours and 5 minutes, the match was suspended twice (once Tuesday and once Wednesday) for insufficient light. The match saw the breaking of multiple records, including longest match and longest set (8 hours and 11 minutes).

Both players performed admirably despite “running on fumes”, as Isner put it. They both broke the previous record for most aces served in a match with Mahut serving 103 and Isner serving 112, breaking the record total number of aces served in a match at 215. With a record number of games in a set (138) and in a match (183), the opponents were neck and neck until the very end. With fans elbowing to be a part of this historic event, Isner and Mahut tied up points in the last game. After scoring the last two points necessary to defeat Mahut, Isner promptly dropped his raquet and collapsed upon the grass in triumph and relief.

In his post-victory interview, Isner was extremely humble, citing the match as creating a bond between him and Mahut. He complimented his opponent’s skill and showed humility far beyond his 25 years. Mahut, meanwhile, showed excellent sportsmanship and grace in his defeat, even hugging his opponent. Both men performed admirably in an event that is unlikely to ever be repeated. {ESPN}

Unfortunately for Isner, there’s no rest for the weary. Despite the multi-day match, Wimbldon officials will make no allowances in the 12:00pm game scheduled for tomorrow, where he takes on Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands.
