Animal print clothing is classy, trendy right now and a nice way to switch up your style if you typically stick to neutrals and want to indulge in a pattern every so often, but Anna Sui may have taken the animal-as-clothing thing a bit too far. Last Wednesday at Lincoln Center, Sui sent a few models down the runway in giant cat hats. {FocusOnStyle}

Fashionista is reporting that the cat hats will be available at Sui’s SoHo store this fall for about $205. If you love crazy hats or you are really into the feline thing, one of these hats may not be a bad investment. The cat hat looks really warm and it completely covers the ears, which is important for staying toasty when the weather gets cold. We do worry, though, that it’s one of those things that works on the runway but not in real life unless you happen to be Lady Gaga. Or a junior high school student participating in spirit week.

Latest in Customization: Prada Sunglasses http://198.46.88.49/style/jewelry/latest-in-customization-prada-sunglasses http://198.46.88.49/style/jewelry/latest-in-customization-prada-sunglasses#respond Thu, 18 Nov 2010 21:55:24 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=16797 It wasn’t too long ago that we brought you news of customizable chocolate bars as the latest in a long line of products that you can personalize in this day and age, and now designer sunglasses have been added to the list of items you can make your own.

A new collection of shades from Prada will come complete with tiny letter, number and symbol squares that can be inserted into the sides of the frames where the brand’s logo normally sits. There is a heart, a star, a dollar sign and an exclamation point among other characters, and you can use them in any combination you want, if of course you have the $365 to spend on a pair of these sunglasses. {The Cut}

Sunglass Hut will have them on sale in black, tortoiseshell and white. The earpieces come apart to allow insertion of the personalization characters, but you can choose only two to put in each earpiece at a time. {stylemebad}

What do you think – are customizable shades cool or too teeny bopper? Do you like them but have no interest in paying $365 for something as fragile as sunglasses? We’re not sure what to make of it, but don’t think it will be a big enough hit and pump up Prada’s sales. Let us know your thoughts!

If Everyone Jumped: The Return of the Fanny Pack? http://198.46.88.49/style/bags/if-everyone-jumped-the-return-of-the-fanny-pack http://198.46.88.49/style/bags/if-everyone-jumped-the-return-of-the-fanny-pack#respond Thu, 21 Oct 2010 11:08:55 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=16380

A fanny pack by any other name is still a bit cheesy, but at least Tory Burch's take doubles as a clutch.

One of the things we love most about fashion is its cyclical nature – the way trends come and go and are reinvented again and again, but it is always surprising when fads that seem like they are destined to be one hit wonders come creeping back into the fashion conversation.

After the fanny pack craze died with the ‘80s, there seemed to be no chance of its return, as it became the brunt of countless jokes, but low and behold, we now present to you the potential resurgence of the hands-free purse.

Pop star Rihanna was recently spotted wearing one, and so many designers have been coming out with “waist bags” or “hip bags” (read: fanny packs) lately that the consensus seems to be that fanny packs are officially back. All of the ones we’ve found look like the creator was attempting to make the look high fashion with extras like flower prints, metal studs and animal fabrics that are very in right now.

Rebecca Minkoff now has a $240 studded version, Tory Burch offers a $195 “hip bag” with a removable strap to double as a clutch, Zambos & Siega are showing a python print number and French Connection has a $58 retro flower print pack that is more casual. And it does not stop there: Gwen Stefani has also come up with a fanny pack design – this one with a silver zipper print. {SheFinds, The Frisky}

We never thought we’d live to see the day when Tory Burch made a fanny pack, and we aren’t sure what to make of it. Will you be wearing a fanny pack any time soon? All we know is if you are, it might be best not to invest in one that’s over $100. Save your splurges for true classic pieces.

Mulberry for Target Has Officially Landed… and Flown Off Shelves http://198.46.88.49/style/bags/mulberry-for-target-has-officially-landed-and-flown-off-of-shelves http://198.46.88.49/style/bags/mulberry-for-target-has-officially-landed-and-flown-off-of-shelves#comments Fri, 15 Oct 2010 02:24:14 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=16298 Gilt launched the new Mulberry line for Target with a pre-release of four handbag styles and to say it was a success would be an understatement. The bags were a hit, selling out in mere minutes and the official launch today at Target stores and on target.com seems to be following suit. Unfortunately, many of the styles are already sold out online, so you’ll have to get a move on and fight it out at a retail location.

The bags range from $14.99 messenger totes to $49.99 satchels and larger duffels. The prints and fabrics range from velvet to denim to faux patent leather, including the eccentric hot pink leopard number pictured above. As Emma Hill, Mulberry’s creative director puts it, “Leopards are king this season.” {New York Times}

With the sheer amount of New Jerseyness happening on television, we’d say animal prints will always have fans regardless of season. Everything from tights to jeans, rainboots and umbrellas are turning up in wild animal prints and bright colors. Though it may not be what you’d expect of the English luxury brand, the sold out status is an indication that they know how to please. Sources at Target tell us that a second shipment of the goods is out of the question for now, so what you see is what you get.

Over the Heart On Your Sleeve? Try Bones on Your Wrists: If Everyone Jumped http://198.46.88.49/style/jewelry/over-the-heart-on-your-sleeve-try-bones-on-your-wrists-if-everyone-jumped http://198.46.88.49/style/jewelry/over-the-heart-on-your-sleeve-try-bones-on-your-wrists-if-everyone-jumped#respond Wed, 06 Oct 2010 21:21:16 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=16187 What is with body parts suddenly becoming appropriate to wear as fashion? First Lady Gaga turns the world on to wearing raw meat, and now apparently bone-inspired pieces are being sold as accessories.

This morning, Elle Accessories posted photos of Shaun Leane gold and silver vertebrae ball bracelets, so you can wear a spine around your wrist if you want to. We have to admit the irony of using body parts as clothes and accessories is kind of interesting, but visible bones are a bit creepy. And we don’t want them crawling around our arms all day. Sure skulls and crossbones can be kind of cool and rocker-ish, and the gold and silver take some of the morbid edge off, but that is where the line needs to be drawn. Unless it’s Halloween, or you’re a 14-year-old going through a goth phase.

If you disagree, or you want to luxe up your Halloween costume, you can get one of these pieces of fine jewelry here for about 1,162 U.S. dollars.

If Everyone Jumped Roundup: KFC Wants Your Butt, KISS Nail Art Rocks and Naked Models at LFW http://198.46.88.49/style/if-everyone-jumped-roundup-kfc-wants-your-butt-kiss-nail-art-rocks-and-naked-models-at-lfw http://198.46.88.49/style/if-everyone-jumped-roundup-kfc-wants-your-butt-kiss-nail-art-rocks-and-naked-models-at-lfw#comments Thu, 23 Sep 2010 14:32:52 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=16042 We’d like to take this week’s “If Everyone Jumped” column to update you, dear readers, on a few past IEJ topics.

First up: the taxi cab as marketing tool trend.

A few months back, we wrote about Penhaligon’s scented taxi cab promotion that was happening in London as the latest in a string of brand’s using the taxi to push their products.

Today, we have news of the latest weird marketing idea.

Now that we think about it, if you double down a few times too often the comfortable sweatpants may come in handy.

KFC (a.k.a. Kentucky Fried Chicken) is offering $500 to college girls at selected universities to wear a pair of red sweatpants with the name of one of their sandwiches, “Double Down,” printed on the butt. {the gloss}

This is not just weird. It’s stupid. Because scores of brands from Abercrombie and Fitch to Juicy Couture and Armani Exchange have successfully gotten women and men alike from all over the world to wear their brand name printed across some part of their body already. And these walking billboards paid the brand for the clothing, not the other way around. Then again, we’re not so sure “Double Down” butt sweatpants would exactly be the hottest commodity at any clothing store. You’d certainly have to pay us to wear them.

Next topic: branded nail art.

Besides using your nails to show off the logos for your favorite Internet browser and junk foods (or an image of your fiancee), now you can pay tribute to your favorite rock band, as the gal here did with her KISS themed nail art. How hysterical is the red tongue bleeding up her finger?

Finally, we give you one new IEJ little tidbit.

“Haute Coffurier” and Lady Gaga hair stylist Charlie le Mindu showed at London Fashion Week a few days ago, and he sent models that were completely naked save for his hats and wigs and a few accessories down the runway. {the gloss} Expect to see a similarly themed challenge appear on America’s Next Top Model in 3, 2… (hey, a few photo shoots have already come close). We probably don’t have to tell you (yes ladies, even those of you who claim to not have any desire at all to look at any other naked woman) why the attempt at showcasing his designs without any other distractions didn’t exactly happen that way.

We don’t know yet if this will turn into a trend for accessories designers, but the absurdity of it was just too good not to share. It did grab attention though, so perhaps the results were exactly as intended.

Lacoste Announces New Line of Fashion Jewelry http://198.46.88.49/style/jewelry/lacoste-announces-new-line-of-fashion-jewelry http://198.46.88.49/style/jewelry/lacoste-announces-new-line-of-fashion-jewelry#respond Thu, 22 Jul 2010 18:53:15 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=14439 Lacoste, the company famous for its crocodile emblazoned tennis shirts, announced the upcoming release of a new jewelry collection. Since its start in France in 1933, the company has expanded on their sporty beginnings to offer a wider range of high-end sportswear for men, women and children – and now, jewelry.

“The Lacoste fashion jewelry is part of the strategy developed with our partners to propose a more complete feminine offer to our clients,” CEO Christophe Chenut says in a recent press release. “This new license confirms our willingness to increase our share among women to accompany the apparel and leather goods development.” {Stylelist}

Smart move. Scheduled to launch at the brand’s Spring fashion show, the lineup is said to include bracelets, necklaces, bags and cell phone cases. All things to make any existing fan happy, and the makings of a more complete shopping experience for the customer already dedicated to the brand. If the bright color combinations from the Fall collection are anything to go by, there might be some pretty unique tennis bracelets on the horizon.

Are You Still a Fan of LiLo’s Style? 6126 Apparel & Handbags Are On Schedule http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/are-you-still-a-fan-of-lilos-style-6126-apparel-handbags-are-on-schedule http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/are-you-still-a-fan-of-lilos-style-6126-apparel-handbags-are-on-schedule#respond Thu, 13 May 2010 20:38:27 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=11637 As you know by now, Lindsay Lohan has been relieved of her creative adviser duties for Emanuel Ungaro.

While she may not have been cut out for a role in high fashion, the embattled actress already has her 6126 line of leggings which has held up pretty well despite her personal woes. Lindsay has expanded the line to include apparel and handbags. The starlet explains “I wanted to create pieces that would allow you to pair your favorite leg wear items with your favorite statement blazer or top, transforming your look from day to night.”

True to Lindsay’s own personal style, the collection includes a lot of black leather and lace, sheer tops and metallics. You can expect the apparel this fall, followed by the handbags in Spring 2011.

Nicole Richie’s Next Style Step is in the Bag http://198.46.88.49/style/bags/nicole-richies-next-style-step-is-in-the-bag http://198.46.88.49/style/bags/nicole-richies-next-style-step-is-in-the-bag#respond Fri, 02 Apr 2010 13:05:02 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=10106
The Nicole Richie who invaded Hollywood years ago with wild antics alongside bestie Paris Hilton is no longer.

Over the past 5 years Nicole has transformed her image, and seemingly herself into a mother, wife, and serious business woman. Her fashion lines of apparel, maternity wear, shoes and jewelry have been a success and now comes word that she will expand her growing empire.

Slated for release in Spring 2011 is a handbag line designed entirely by Nicole, and reflective of her personal style and taste.

The line will be “very, very, very Nicole…Nicole has been really all over doing this,” according to Ricky Cytrynbaum, co-founder of the production company for Richie’s House of Harlow and Winter Kate lines, in WWD. “If you look at the clothing and you look at the footwear, you get an idea of what the bags are going to be.” {Stylelist}

The bags won’t be available until next spring (expansions into sunglasses and footwear hit stores first), but they’ll range from $295 to $595. {WWD}Even though the luxury industry is rebounding, those are price points that should do well with consumers who shop the middle, as opposed to the highest or lowest ends.

We love Nicole and think her eye for fashion is classy and chic. House of Harlow and Winter Kate have been well received, so we’re looking forward to seeing what she has in store.
