Tom Ford – Signature9 http://198.46.88.49 Lifestyle Intelligence Wed, 04 May 2011 18:27:37 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.3.4 The Top 9 WTF? Moments From the 2011 Met Gala http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/the-top-9-wtf-moments-from-the-2011-met-gala http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/the-top-9-wtf-moments-from-the-2011-met-gala#respond Tue, 03 May 2011 20:55:41 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=19751 This is normally Fug Girls territory, but as we were browsing through the myriad of Met Gala photos, a few stopped us in our clicks as we let out an audible WTF? (why that frock? if we’re keeping this family friendly). Given the sheer number of times that it happened, we’re pretty sure Heather and Jessica (the girls) are going to be busy for a while, so we’ll go ahead and make our own compilation of the top 9 WTF? moments from this year’s Met Costume Institute Gala.

Stella McCartney in Stella McCartney

Do you remember your elementary school diorama project where you cut a hole in a box and dropped in figurines? This is like that, but with a nice pair of legs in place of the figurines. The oddly bulky top doesn’t help either, and as gorgeous as a lot of the attendees looked in Stella McCartney, we’re really not sure about the designer’s own fashion diorama.

Carolyn Murphy in Tom Ford

Granted, it’s the Costume Institue Gala, but this purple ensemble would be more at home on a theater stage or the costume rack for Burlesque. Tom Ford is pretty much the best accessory anyone could have, but between the weird tassel neckpiece and our feeling that Carolyn Murphy is making a silent prayer not to have a wardrobe malfunction – that strap is clinging for dear life – this really should have been left in a wardrobe trailer.

Frieda Pinto in Chanel

Everyone in fashion loves Karl Lagerfeld, but this is an homage too far.

Christina Hendricks in Carolina Herrera

Sigh. Christina Hendricks is absolutely gorgeous, this giant rust stain is absolutely not. We’re going to imagine Christina Hendricks in the nude for completely sartorial reasons.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Burberry

We know Duchess Catherine has kicked off a bit of a trend with sleeves, but we just can’t with these extra shiny, slouchy gauntlet/arm warmer combos.

Kristin Stewart in Proenza Schouler

At an event celebrating a designer who was known for his skill in tailoring, we just can’t get over these frumpty dump dresses, and this one is no exception.

Julianna Margulies in Narciso Rodriguez

Since we’ve established by now that we’re not feeling the baggy bodices, we’ll continue directly to the side cutouts. If there’s anything that can make a designer gown look like a prom dress you’ll be embarrassed to be seen in 10 years down the road, it’s side cutouts. They’re so miss or miss (really, the hits can probably be tallied on one hand, with a few fingers remaining), and particularly so on this dress. Again, gorgeous woman, who should not have been subjected to this ruffled baggy crop top monstrosity.

Serena Williams in feathers & Demi Moore in Prabal Gurung

Dear Ms. Williams and Ms. Moore, the event you’re looking for was across the Atlantic, and it ended a few days ago.

The Time 100 Fashion Influencer Everyone Is Overlooking http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/the-time-100-fashion-influencer-everyone-is-overlooking http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/the-time-100-fashion-influencer-everyone-is-overlooking#respond Thu, 21 Apr 2011 21:01:59 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=19605 The Time 100, Time magazine’s annual list of the most influential people of the world, is out and everyone has noticed that Tom Ford is one of the few influencers from the world of fashion on the list. For US readers he may be the most recognizable, but considering the global nature of the article he’s not the only one.

Hung Huang, who’s profile even includes the subtitle “Fashion Mogul” (hint hint), was described by profile author Diane von Furstenberg as “one of the most formidable women I’ve ever met.” While two still isn’t a crowd, it’s a slightly better than a single representative for fashion.

49-year-old Hung (sometimes written as Hong Huang) is the daughter of one of Chairman Mao’s favorite translators, former wife of Palme d’Or winning Chinese director Chen Kaige, but most important a fashion media mogul described by CNN as China’s answer to Oprah. In other words, pretty important in a market that many Western fashion brands – okay, brands in general – are trying to establish a presence in.

The Business of Fashion published an interview with Hung in January where she selected her top 5 Chinese fashion talents, and given her oft mentioned understanding of the US market, it’s safe to say Hung and her iLook magazine are well positioned to at the very least be the Anna Wintour of China.

Many businesses who want to enter China find that to legally comply with government regulations partnerships with Chinese companies or individuals is a necessity. Considering the number of brands who want to grow their presence in China, we’d say Hung is a pretty good selection for one of the world’s most influential people. Even if she’s not recognizable enough to make used cars sexy. {the Cut}

Carine Roitfeld Exits French Vogue With ‘No Plan At All’ http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/carine-roitfeld-exits-french-vogue http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/carine-roitfeld-exits-french-vogue#respond Fri, 17 Dec 2010 19:03:41 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=17370 After 10 years at the helm of Vogue Paris/French Vogue, Carine Roitfeld announced that she’ll be leaving the magazine in January.

She spoke with Cathy Horyn and said “It’s 10 years that I’m editor of the magazine. I think it’s time to do something different.”

Though apparently, she’s not exactly sure of what something different is. “I have no plan at all,” she told Horyn. {On the Runway/New York Times}

It’s doubtful that Roitfeld, who worked closely with Tom Ford during his Gucci days and launched the career of model Lara Stone (who has since gone on to book major campaign after campaign), will have to look far for a new opportunity.

Jonathan Newhouse, head of Vogue publisher  Conde Nast International, told Vogue UK “It’s impossible to overstate Carine’s powerful contribution to Vogue and to the fields of fashion and magazine publishing. Under her direction Vogue Paris received record levels of circulation and advertising and editorial success.”

When we spoke with Roitfeld at the end of the first Fashion Celebration Night (the Paris take on Fashion’s Night Out), she didn’t seem concerned with cloning the everyone’s invited American style event, instead opting for one that required invitations – which obtained by buying a copy of Vogue Paris, but invite required nonetheless. Though much smaller than the night in New York, it seemed to be a financial success for retailers, something no one has been willing to speak about for the US version.

It’s great that Roitfeld is going out strong, though we suspect (hope) it will only be a matter of time before she pairs up with familiar names. Is Tom Ford’s turn as guest editor a hint at the personal projects to come? If there’s anyone who understands taking a break for other creative endeavors and coming back to fashion in their own way, it’s definitely Ford. We’d put money on future plans involving him, even if they aren’t set as of yet.

If Everyone Jumped: Turban-Topped Models and Celebrities, Oh My http://198.46.88.49/style/jewelry/if-everyone-jumped-turban-topped-models-and-celebrities-oh-my http://198.46.88.49/style/jewelry/if-everyone-jumped-turban-topped-models-and-celebrities-oh-my#respond Thu, 11 Nov 2010 20:42:04 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=16691

Salma Hayek and Kate Moss try to reignite the trend of glamorous turbans

If you’ve got grey hair but no money for a dye job, you’ve ever dreamed of channeling Erykah Badu, you have frequent bad hair days or you just really hate washing and or styling your hair, you can now take advantage of the latest hair trend.

This week, The New York Times declared the turban is having a moment as a completely fashionable hair accessory. Actually, The Times said the turban was never really out of style but has been lying dormant for a few years and is now making a quiet but forceful comeback. We don’t really recall a time when turbans were ever that huge of a fad. Headscarves or hair handkerchiefs, yes. Turbans, not so much.

In any case, it does seem that the turban has made a quiet emergence as all the rage on fashion runways and in celebrity circles. Jason Wu used black and cobalt turbans in his spring collection, and Vena Cava sent models down the runway in them for their own show, while Giorgio Armani used North African-inspired turbans in his most recent collection. In the celebrity corner of the ring, Solange Knowles wore a Roberto Cavalli scarf as a turban to the Tom Ford show, and Salma Hayek rocked a navy and white printed one to the Stella McCartney show in Paris. {NYTimes}

“People didn’t bite when Miuccia Prada showed them a few years ago,” stylist June Ambrose told the Times, “but since then, it’s caught on.”

This may be yet another trend that supermodel Kate Moss started, as she was spotted wearing a turban at the Met gala in May of last year.

The Times claims ordinary women are embracing the trend as well with ladies in turbans turning up on the Web site Streetpeeper.

When used in dark neutrals like navy, grey and black, the turban definitely adds a certain edge to runway shows, but we’re not sure how easy it actually is to pull off on the streets. It takes a high amount of confidence to wear a headpiece like this, but if you’re feeling it, by all means rock that turban.

Fashion’s Night Out: The Top 10 Events for Celeb Seekers http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/fashions-night-out-the-top-10-events-for-celeb-seekers http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/fashions-night-out-the-top-10-events-for-celeb-seekers#respond Thu, 19 Aug 2010 23:43:16 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=15201 Last year we covered Fashion’s Night Out from Paris, where we caught up with Carine Roitfeld, to London and New York. Each city was an overall success in terms of bringing out the shoppers, but the feel of each event was distinctly different. The Paris Fashion Celebration Night focused exclusively on the high end merchants along the Triangle D’Or (Golden Triangle – the area along Avenue Montaigne, George V and Champs-Elysées). Roitfeld made it clear that small and luxe was more in keeping with Paris Vogue’s reader, and this year has the same list of merchants. Aside from Vogue editors, who are fashion stars in their own right, there weren’t many big names tied to the events.

Allowing the clothes to be the stars of the evening certainly has its merits, but we’d be lying if we didn’t admit that we’re pretty excited about the madness that will surely accompany the more inclusive New York event. In Paris, there was champagne, cotton candy and chocolate fondue depending on which store you stopped at, but New York promises to pull out all the stops: celebrities, designers and shopping specials to go along with your champagne.

Still, everyone has a different shopping personality. An Olsen twin and throngs of fans waiting for an opportunity to meet their favorite designer might be a dream shopping trip for some, and an absolute nightmare for others. With that in mind, we’ve gone through the hundreds of events on the Fashion’s Night Out website so far and narrowed them down to the top 10 events by shopping personality. Today, we take a look at the must-attend events for those who like a bit of celebrity with their shopping. In the coming days, we’ll cover events for those who prefer something more low key, downtown style, fashion, fashion and more fashion and the girl who just wants to have fun.

The Starlet

Big and flashy is how you roll. If anyone asks “who are you wearing?” you’ve got a list of famous names on the tip of your tongue. Celebrities, designers and hundreds of adoring fans? You couldn’t come up with a better shopping scenario.

Lights, Camera… Tom Ford? http://198.46.88.49/living/lights-camera-tom-ford http://198.46.88.49/living/lights-camera-tom-ford#respond Thu, 03 Dec 2009 01:27:11 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=7441

Former Gucci/YSL creative director Tom Ford is known for bringing sexy back during the ’90s, but he’s well on his way to being recognized as a film director in his own right as well.

For his debut film A Single Man, which showcases the chops of acting giants Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, Ford receives great accolades from critics who perhaps weren’t expecting something so sensitive and beautifully poignant from the man who introduced cut-to-there velvet hip-huggers in the mid ’90s.  Publisher and Ford acquaintance Lisa Eisner states plainly that “when people think of Tom they think he has sex a million times a day” — an image which seems to contrast with that of serious filmmaker.

We’re pleased that Ford’s foray into cinema hasn’t turned into something gauche and lusty, and after learning more about A Single Man we certainly look forward to adding it to our [ever-growing] movie list.

Ford’s Return Confirmed http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/fords-return-confirmed http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/fords-return-confirmed#respond Sat, 24 Oct 2009 13:18:46 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=3754 tomfordIn an interview with WWD, Tom Ford confirmed that the $50 million ish in funding that Tom Ford International (via chairman and longtime business partner Domenico De Sole) was seeking earlier this year (so sparking twitters of excitement from fans (including us) hopeful that its intention were a Ford-lead re-launch) is indeed intended for his return to womenswear. After empowering Gucci with unprecedented success and irresistible sexiness, Ford left the group in 2004 and has been busy applying the Midas touch to menswear, beauty, eyewear, accessories, a film, and some opera costumes. {Wikipedia}
The timeline for his homecoming is yet to be determined. “Very soon” he told WWD, and dependent on when finances are secured, after which point the soothsayer predicts 18 months before show time.
And this time he’s committed: “I’m optimistic and this is something that I plan on doing for the next 30 years of my life, so if I have to wait another six months or a year [to launch women’s], it’s OK.”
