Spring/Summer 2011 – Signature9 http://198.46.88.49 Lifestyle Intelligence Thu, 28 Apr 2011 23:59:09 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.3.4 Can Summer Fashion Trends Harm your Health? http://198.46.88.49/style/can-summer-fashion-trends-harm-your-health http://198.46.88.49/style/can-summer-fashion-trends-harm-your-health#respond Thu, 28 Apr 2011 23:59:09 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=19636

Some of the hottest trends in fashion may look great, but what if they carried irritating health risks? Dr. Oz recently took on a few summer style staples that have some not so pretty side effects. {Dr. Oz Fans}

The first offender, and most popular summer footwear for women, are the ankle-strap wedges. Offering little to no ankle support, coupled with friction and an uneven walking surface, this stylish trend may be your worst enemy this season leaving you with sprains or blisters. A suggested fix? Choose styles with multi-strapped, buckled ankle support. Also try wearing gym socks in them the day before to stretch out the shoe to ensure a comfortable fit all day.

The thick, cinched-waist belt, also a big trend, comes with its own health hazards. Offering that hour-glass shape also means prolonged pushing against the stomach walls, causing indigestion and heartburn. Skinny belts can be layered and worn slightly lower to accentuate your shape without as much discomfort. If you can’t part with a wide belt look but want to avoid the discomfort, we’d also suggest a fabric belt, which can be a bit more flexible than stiff leathers or plastics.

One of our favorite trends,  metal aviator sunglasses, are also on the hazard list. In hot weather, metal frames mixed with sweat can result in heat-related rashes on the delicate skin around the eyes. Dr. Oz notes, “Many people don’t realize their sunglasses are to blame for the rash.” Plastic frames are recommended for shades that won’t leave you with any conditions that require larger sunglasses to cover up.

We’ve accepted a while ago that a certain amount of suffering can be required for fashion, but there’s nothing wrong with minimizing the risk.

Trend Alert: Fashion Week Runways are White Hot http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/trend-alert-fashion-week-runways-are-white-hot http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/trend-alert-fashion-week-runways-are-white-hot#respond Mon, 20 Sep 2010 11:15:05 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=15942

It’s official, for Spring 2011 white is the new black. Natural tones are the way to go year and the sensible and classy looks we saw strutting the runways at Mercedes-Benz Fashion week showcased just how red hot head-to-toe white can be.

The photos above are of nine different white looks from designers’ SS11 presentations and shows at Lincoln Center in Manhattan for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. This past week has flown by and the shows are getting great reviews. Clearly white is in for both men (at Lacoste) and women (at nearly every other show) next year as the crisp, clean shade is seen repeatedly on the catwalk.

We are intrigued by the range in proportion, drape and silhouette throughout the collections and the diversity in fabric and detail make for a really classically-dressed season.

Just some of the designers offering head-to-toe white ensembles in their Spring/Summer 2011 collections include Victoria Beckham, BCBG Max Azria, Doo-Ri, Christian Siriano, Frank Tell, Jen Kao, Calvin Klein, Julian Louie, Nicole Miller, Mandy Coon, Peter Som, Rag & Bone, Band of Outsiders, Jill Stuart, Lacoste, Rebecca Minkoff, Ports 1961, Prabal Gurung and Derek Lam.

Fashion Week Update: Steve Madden Goes High Zac Posen Goes Low with a Collab for Z Spoke for http://198.46.88.49/style/shoes/fashion-week-update-steve-madden-goes-high-zac-posen-goes-low-with-a-collab-for-z-spoke-for http://198.46.88.49/style/shoes/fashion-week-update-steve-madden-goes-high-zac-posen-goes-low-with-a-collab-for-z-spoke-for#comments Tue, 14 Sep 2010 17:07:11 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=15883 Everyone knows Steve Madden for his trendy, affordable retail shoe collections that are often inspired by the high-end versions seen on the runways. Sometimes too inspired, as numerous designers have brought lawsuits against Madden over the years for copyright infringement for the all-too-similar styles. This time around Steve Madden has taken his talents to the luxury market with a new line created for Zac Posen.

On September 11th at New York Fashion Week, Madden debuted his first high-end collaboration for the Spring/Summer 2011 Z Spoke show for Zac Posen at Lincoln Center. The collection is truly unique and the sky-high, strappy numbers are fit for an eclectic and bold fashionista!

Making their Fashion Week debut, Madden’s shoes included metallic green (left) as well as black sky-high platform sandals with ankle straps and buckles, black peep-toe stiletto lace-up ankle booties, and ladylike lavender pumps with wicked heels. The line was made especially for the runway so it is unlikely we will see mall-goers rocking these elite styles- but we have no doubt that the man known for knockoffs will jump at the opportunity to reinterpret his own designs (at least he won’t have to worry about legal fees). {Stylelist}

Even model Ataui Deng wobbled in the tipsy footwear and fell victim to Fashion Week’s first tumble on the runway. {Refinery 29}

Tell us what you think about Steve Madden’s luxury footwear collaboration! Would you rock these styles?

Christian Siriano Springs Forward with SS11 and Another Line for Payless http://198.46.88.49/style/christian-siriano-springs-forward-with-ss11-and-another-line-for-payless http://198.46.88.49/style/christian-siriano-springs-forward-with-ss11-and-another-line-for-payless#respond Mon, 13 Sep 2010 20:14:50 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=15811 With New York Fashion Week officially underway, we wanted to take a closer look at one of first and highly anticipated shows to hit the runway. Project Runway winner, Christian Siriano’s Spring/Summer collection hit the catwalk in unbelievable style. The “safari glam” clothes and enormous, draped evening gowns were stunners, but what really stole the show were the fierce footwear for the designer’s Payless collection.

The line was very demure, focusing on shades of red, cream and metallics. The silhouettes stood out with flowing maxi dresses, scalloped chartreuse, sleek white pants and belted mini dresses all- paired with chunky accessories.

The shoes were a spectacle all their own with varying geometric shapes, cutouts, straps and ties. In the past we have seen how adventurous Siriano can be with designing high heels, and this year was no different. The spiky, rounded and contorted designs are unique, yet feminine and classy. {Le Petite Fashionista}

There was some mixed reaction as the show’s attendees carefully examined each look.

Fashionista commented, “The problem with Siriano’s SS11 collection is that it’s caught in limbo between wearable and editorial looks. While the sportswear felt like a tribute to tried and true vacation-wear (slim white pants, leather short trenches, voluminous maxi-dresses, lone ruffles, and exotic prints) his sumptuous evening wear is a unique offering…At this point in his career, Siriano needs to choose a team and stick with it—I say drama all the way.” {Racked}

We agree that a lot of what we saw on the runway was theatrical and extravagant and not necessarily  practical for wear. The shoes in particular, although designed for Payless, will probably be heavily toned down by the time we see them hit store shelves. Either way, we will be the first in line to snag his sleek styles at a steal of a price.

Is Lincoln Center the Right Move for Fashion Week? http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/is-lincoln-center-the-right-move-for-fashion-week http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/is-lincoln-center-the-right-move-for-fashion-week#respond Mon, 22 Feb 2010 13:30:43 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=9508 Tommy Hilfiger’s Fall 2010 collection officially closed Fashion Week, which he described as a “bittersweet honor” {Fox 5}. The show ended an era as this will be the last time Bryant Park will host the prestigious event. Its new home, beginning with the Spring/Summer 2011 collections shown in September, will be Lincoln Center.

Although most are optimistic about the move, not everyone sees Lincoln Center as quite the right fit for such a massive showcase. Businesses surrounding the center are voicing concerns about what this means for the future. Fashion week alone has estimated revenues upwards of 1/4 of a million dollars annually, entertaining thousands of people.  Hotel owners note that during fashion week they do peak business, leaving little to no available vacancies. Will the influx of people be too chaotic for surrounding businesses?

Fashion week doesn’t last forever, and we think that this move could open up opportunities for other companies to profit. More exposure can lead to more business, which would be a win/win for everyone.
