Spotify has only been available in the US since July, but they aren’t wasting any time going after as many corners of the online music market as they can.

Today at LeWeb, Spotify founder Daniel Ek announced that the company will be launching “Spotify Radio,” with a few features that they are surely hoping will make it a Pandora killer.

Unlike Pandora, Spotify Radio will allow users unlimited skipping of tracks and unlimited stations. Spotify Radio will be available on free accounts, with no paid subscription required.

Building on their recently launched platform, Ek says the Spotify team attributes their success to the fact that “people buy music because they want to take it with them.”

Since announcing a partnership with Facebook at the F8 conference in September, Spotify has added 7 million users. Ek says that 2.5 million Spotify users pay for the service at an average of €10 per month, which would give the music startup revenue of €25 million per month, though there’s no word on how much licensing fees represent, and if there are any differences in radio fees and the licensing fees Spotify currently pays as an on-demand jukebox.

Rdio Opening Streaming Music To All Who Will Pay http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/rdio-opening-streaming-music-to-all-who-will-pay http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/rdio-opening-streaming-music-to-all-who-will-pay#respond Tue, 03 Aug 2010 15:16:16 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=14917 For music streaming in the US, most of us already use Pandora, or are waiting for the eventual US release of Spotify.  The difference being that Pandora allows you to stream music based on the song or artist, and it’s all music that’s decided to be similar by Pandora.  Spotify, on the other hand, let’s you choose what song or album you want to listen to, and essentially becomes a music library in the cloud.  We may not have Spotify quite yet, but anyone who wants it can now sign up for a similar service, Rdio. {GigaOM}

Rdio is almost exactly like Spotify, it’s a platform for streaming music from the cloud.  Rdio has about 7 million songs, and is continuing to add more.  The music can be streamed via web browser, an Adobe AIR desktop app, or a mobile app.  Streaming to the mobile apps does cost more, $10 a month as opposed to $5 a month for just desktop streaming.  Rdo also allows users to create playlists or “save” music to their collection for easier access.

Today Rdio is finally opening the doors to those who weren’t able to secure an invitation.  After playing with the service for about a month, it can be worthwhile to some.  Being able to access almost any song you want from Rdio makes it a nice service to have.  Also, having that access on a smartphone is spectacular, so you don’t have to take up all your storage space with music you may not always listen to.  For those who listen to a lot of music, and tend to just hit the shuffle button on a 5000+ iTunes library, Rdio is a nice experiment, and a great way to try out new music, but it falls a bit short.  Unless you want to create a huge playlist with all songs you have in a library, there’s no way to just play through a collection.  At just $5 a month for the desktop version, it is worth trying fora one month test drive though.

Spotify Announces New Plans, Still No US Launch Date http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/spotify-announces-new-plans-still-no-us-launch-date http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/spotify-announces-new-plans-still-no-us-launch-date#respond Wed, 19 May 2010 12:18:17 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=11885

Spotify, the European music streaming service is adding some new plans, as it launches into a new country.  Unfortunately for Americans, that country is the Netherlands.  The plans, however, might be another indication that the service is looking into the US market.

The new plans are called Spotify Unlimited and Spotify Open.  Spotify Unlimited will cost users £5, or the equivalent thereof, for unlimited, ad-free streaming to a single computer, not unlike how MOG works for US customers.  Spotify Open doesn’t need any payment or even credit card information.  It includes 20 hours of listening per month to anyone that lives within a country that supports Spotify {Spotify}.

The problem with Spotify, for would-be American users is that despite constant promises from Spotify and it’s purchase of US servers in March, there is still no planned launch date.  We’ve already gone through a few this year alone ranging from “early 2010” to “Spring,” “Q3” and the latest “before the end of the year” {Wired}.  As Wired points out the new plans are similar to the sort of deals that the RIAA approves for other services such as MOG.  Meanwhile, MOG is working on a mobile app that could possibly be similar to Spotify, Rhapsody continues it’s service, and rumors are flying of Apple announcing an iTunes streaming service sometime soon {Gizmodo}.

If Spotify fails to get in the US market soon and either MOG or Apple come out with high-quality mobile apps that do the same thing, the chance could be easily lost.  Despite it’s social features, Spotify likely can’t win unless it has a presence before Apple expands their iTunes offerings.
