Instead of ordering mass quantities of ornaments and trees to deck the White House halls, the First Lady decided to dig around the Presidential basement, re-use the 800 or so ornaments from previous administrations, have 60 community groups bedazzle them with local flavor, and then decorate according to the theme: “Reflect. Rejoice. Renew.”

While you may not have 800 ornaments in your basement (at least, we hope you don’t), this holiday season is the perfect time to take a leaf from the First Family’s book and “renew” and recycle your old decor – all in the name of good taste and green living, of course!

Lily Allen Still Makes Us Smile http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/lily-allen-still-makes-us-smile http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/lily-allen-still-makes-us-smile#respond Thu, 03 Dec 2009 01:51:06 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=7448 Word on the street is that Lily Allen, our favorite little Britpop spitfire, is taking a break from music for at least a year or two in order to focus her attentions on both her fledgling record label and her fashion rental shop, which she will run with her sister, Sarah.

Named Lucy In Disguise (we love that!), the London-based store offers a stylish yet budget-friendly alternative for women seeking to easily update their looks.  “It’s about making fashion democratic,” Allen explains, “so [people] can go out and feel like a million dollars and it won’t cost them a million dollars.”

We think the idea is brilliant, and Lucy In Disguise seems like a smart, simple, and green way to extend the lives of our wardrobes.  Although we’re sad Lily is stepping away from music for the time being, we’re looking forward to Lucy — and crossing our fingers that she’ll be hopping over the pond sometime soon.

Thrift Or Treat http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/thrift-or-treat http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/thrift-or-treat#respond Tue, 27 Oct 2009 20:35:18 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=4421 If you still haven’t finalized a costume for Halloween this year, think about taking the advice of Jackie from LA’s largest thrift store, St. Vincent de Paul, and shop thrift stores to find the perfect dress-up duds.

You might also be able to score some great non-Halloween pieces for your wardrobe in the process if you play your cards right; if you’re stumped, think of fashion icons and go from there.  Maybe scour the shops for some great black dresses and pearls to channel Coco Chanel (or Holly Golightly — different decade, same idea), or be like Madge (circa. 1985) and pile on lace gloves and crucifixes — that way, you’ll be able to incorporate your finds into the rest of your closet post-Halloween.
