Not quite ready to invest in the real thing? Pantone says the emerald color will be all over the place for 2013, meaning you can channel the style without the emerald cuts. Photo credit: thisisbossi/Flickr

Long a hit with red carpet starlets, emerald will get a bit of extra attention in 2013 as Pantone’s Color of the Year.

17-5461 is the official ID – speaking of, are Pantone IDs the equivalent of Social Security numbers for colors? When their glory days are behind them, and they’re sent off to an old age home for hues we can see Honeysuckle sitting around with a cup of hot cocoa complaining to Turquoise that Pantone payments just haven’t kept up with the cost of living, but we digress.

Emeralds, though often admired for their strong, vibrant green cuts, actually have a beautiful range that includes greens tinged with just a hint of blue (our favorite, and an ideal shade to complement the turquoise color of the year items still in your closet or around your home) and even pale, glassy shades that wouldn’t be recognized as emeralds at first glance.

Pantone seems to have settled on the slightly bluish green shade to represent the spectrum. For design geeks, we present the RGB, CMYK and HTML Hex codes of Pantone Emerald, between a few complimentary and contrasting spectrums.

Honeysuckle 18-2120 Ousts Turquoise As 2011 Color of the Year http://198.46.88.49/style/honeysuckle-18-2120-ousts-turquoise-as-2011-color-of-the-year http://198.46.88.49/style/honeysuckle-18-2120-ousts-turquoise-as-2011-color-of-the-year#respond Tue, 21 Dec 2010 10:33:50 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=17412

What, you may ask, is Honeysuckle 18-2120? It’s Pantone’s pick for the color that will rule the world in 2011.

Taking over for Turquoise 15-5519, Leatrice Eiseman, the Pantone Color Institute’s Executive Director, describes the color as “a captivating, stimulating color, that gets the adrenaline going- perfect to ward off the blues.” {the Independent}

Poor blues. Just last year soothing turquoise shades were the color to beat, and now they get the news that they just weren’t upbeat enough for 2011.

Eiseman tells the Independent “While the 2010 color of the year, Pantone 15-5519 Turquoise, served as an escape for many, Honeysuckle emboldens us to face everyday troubles with verve and vigor.”

If you’re feeling emboldened by the color of the year, but want to lend the color to web or print design products, the codes in the image above should be a good starting point. Honeysuckle’s HTML hex color is #D34B73 and the corresponding RGB values are 211, 75, 115.

Pantone’s Fall Colors Are In http://198.46.88.49/style/pantones-fall-2010-colors http://198.46.88.49/style/pantones-fall-2010-colors#respond Fri, 12 Feb 2010 23:44:01 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=9428 Have you stocked up on turquoise items for spring and summer? Good, because a strikingly similar color named “lagoon” makes an appearance in Pantone’s Fall/Winter 2010 color trend palette.

If you’re not one for the blue lagoon shades, fear not as 9 other colors are included in Pantone’s most recent report. From left to right as they appear in the vertical stripes pictured above, there’s Endive, a pale yellow; Golden Glow, which as the name implies is a rich autumn gold; Living Coral, which is, well – coral; Lipstick Red, a berry-tinged shade of red; Purple Orchid, a bright purple; Chocolate Truffle, a purple-hued brown; Lagoon, possibly a sister shade to the Turquoise announced as the “it” color last year; Woodbine, a grassy green; Oyster Gray, a soft gray with a hint of pink; and Rose Dust, a soft pink with a hint of gray.

Lipstick Red, Living Coral, Purple Orchid and Chocolate Truffle are obvious choices for shades likely to pop up in beauty products, with the others more likely to make appearances in clothes on the runway.

Pantone Color, long the official color authority for design professionals, has declared turquoise, no. 15-5519, the color of 2010. The choice, in reality, seems fitting and telling of the current signs of time: it is at once soothing and invigorating, evoking water and sky, or your next getaways to some far-off, tropical paradise. In more global terms, turquoise has long occupied a special place in many cultures as a protective talisman, signifying compassion and healing, inspired by nature. For more proletariat concerns, it will make for an amazing accent to wardrobes, apartments or perhaps a bit of inspiration for informed holiday purchases sure to look current in the new year. And who can’t use a little peace of mind and protection these days? Now here’s to hoping for a better, more invigorating year ahead indeed.
