On Wednesday, news spread that the famously handsome quarterback and husband to Supermodel Gisele Bündchen agreed to a deal with Ugg Australia that will make him the face of the brand’s men’s division, marking the first time Ugg has specifically pushed men’s products.{Styleite}

According to a press release from Deckers Outdoor Corporation, which acquired the Ugg brand in 1995, Brady adores Uggs and wears them all the time (doubtful), and company Chairman and CEO Angela Martinez said Mr. Gisele’s status as a highly noted football player and “style icon” makes him their ideal spokesman.

We were going to say that what that likely means is Brady is meant to make Uggs seem more masculine and thus more appealing to a wider population of men, but actually Uggs are already pretty masculine-looking and have somehow become associated with women and girls. The Uggs will probably, therefore, have the opposite effect on Brady. In other words, he’s liable to find his Ugg boots wearing him, not the other way around. The score for now: Ugg-1, Brady-0.

Fashion Week Update: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Postpone The Row’s Spring/Summer Presentation http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/fashion-week-update-mary-kate-and-ashley-olsen-reportedly-postpone-the-rows-springsummer-presentation http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/fashion-week-update-mary-kate-and-ashley-olsen-reportedly-postpone-the-rows-springsummer-presentation#comments Sun, 12 Sep 2010 22:13:46 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=15855 The second New York Fashion Week Presentation of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s upscale collection, The Row, has reportedly been cancelled.

It is unclear whether the line will still be presented through appointments, but restraints dealing with delivery are reportedly to blame for the delay.

The Olsen sisters have released the following statement: “We have made the decision to postpone our spring-summer 2011 presentation of The Row due to sample delivery. Production and delivery of our samples is delayed by a few days and this has cast us out of the New York schedule. We will therefore present it to the market within the Paris schedule. We are excited and are looking forward to presenting our collection.” {Fashionista}

We aren’t sure if the recession has more to do with the cancellation, but there’s speculation that the label has been struggling with sales and made big budget cuts through layoffs early last year.

The high-end collection is known for its outrageous prices (think $500 for a T-shirt) and a good part of the line ended up on the sale racks at Barney’s sample sale. {Fashionologie }Perhaps the market still isn’t back to what it used to be for higher priced clothing. Whatever the reason, it is a disappointment that there will be no New York show, but we are still looking forward to their return in Paris and will try to stop by the showroom to get a closer look at the collection.

Housing Works Fall Preview: Thrift Shop Fashion For Charity http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/housing-works-fall-preview-thrift-shop-fashion-for-charity http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/housing-works-fall-preview-thrift-shop-fashion-for-charity#respond Thu, 26 Aug 2010 20:26:59 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=15475 If you love fashion, thrifty finds and helping a charitable cause, they all go hand in hand at Housing Works. The place is an absolute haven for vintage and designer clothes, accessories, shoes, art, books, furniture and home goods. If that weren’t reason enough to love it, all of the proceeds from the deeply discounted deals go towards helping those who are homeless and living with HIV and AIDS.

A Louis Vuitton Damier print bag, currently being auctioned for Housing Works. Current bid: $241

The influx of new merchandise is endless and the selection, divine. If you have the time to sort through everything it’s almost impossible to leave empty-handed.

The majority of the clothing is $10 or less and we’ve seen some great pieces from H&M, the Gap and Lord & Taylor – not to mention the higher end brands like Marc Jacobs and Yves Saint Laurent that often make their way to the shop. You can sometimes luck up on eBay or at your run of the mill thrift store, but where else are you going to find a $28 Burberry sport coat in mint condition? No, we didn’t miss any zeros there.

Chatting with one of the chain’s coordinators who runs the shop on 90th street and 2nd avenue, we learned that items donated are sometimes rare and invaluable (think antique, genuine ivory elephant tusks), and the window displays are where the bid-only items are displayed. Window shopping and see something you like? Log on to shophousingworks.com to bid on your item of choice for a steal of a price.

If you haven’t had a chance to peruse the shelves yet, now is the time. The annual Fall Preview Sale is kicking off September 8th at the Chelsea store, and rolls on to each of the store’s New York locations through the 30th. {The Cut} ShopHousingWorks.com gets its own day on September 15th, so those outside of New York can still get in on the action.

Thrift shopping can be an adventure of its own and knowing it helps benefit a worthy cause makes the experience that much richer. Take a look for yourself and see just how awesome Housing Works is. Happy Hunting!

David Beckham to Design Menswear for Victoria’s Label http://198.46.88.49/mens-style/mens-clothing/david-beckham-to-design-menswear-for-victorias-label http://198.46.88.49/mens-style/mens-clothing/david-beckham-to-design-menswear-for-victorias-label#respond Tue, 03 Aug 2010 14:22:39 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=14915 David Beckham will reportedly design a menswear line for spring/summer 2011 under wife Victoria’s own popular VB Denim fashion label. And apparently it took some convincing from the former Spice Girl for Beckham to agree to do it. {Vogue UK}

“Victoria has been trying to persuade him to do it for a while and he’s finally succumbed,” a source close to the Beckhams told the Mail on Sunday. “She has reassured him that he has an eye for fashion.”

The line will supposedly include “an entire range of men’s couture clothing of fitted suits, smart day wear and an evening range.” {Styleite}

We can only hope the good-looking soccer star will appear in the ads for the line as well. Something akin to his previous Armani underwear photos would at least draw attention from the ladies (and a few guys as well).

This isn’t Beckham’s first reported foray into fashion design. Last year, WWD wrote that he would be collaborating on an Adidas Originals collection with Designer James Bond. {Styleite}

The new menswear collection is sure to be stellar, especially if the designs reflect Beckham’s crisp style – and if Victoria and her team are overseeing it. We’ll keep you posted when the inevitable sneak peeks of the line leak their way onto the fashion Internet.

Lacoste Announces New Line of Fashion Jewelry http://198.46.88.49/style/jewelry/lacoste-announces-new-line-of-fashion-jewelry http://198.46.88.49/style/jewelry/lacoste-announces-new-line-of-fashion-jewelry#respond Thu, 22 Jul 2010 18:53:15 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=14439 Lacoste, the company famous for its crocodile emblazoned tennis shirts, announced the upcoming release of a new jewelry collection. Since its start in France in 1933, the company has expanded on their sporty beginnings to offer a wider range of high-end sportswear for men, women and children – and now, jewelry.

“The Lacoste fashion jewelry is part of the strategy developed with our partners to propose a more complete feminine offer to our clients,” CEO Christophe Chenut says in a recent press release. “This new license confirms our willingness to increase our share among women to accompany the apparel and leather goods development.” {Stylelist}

Smart move. Scheduled to launch at the brand’s Spring fashion show, the lineup is said to include bracelets, necklaces, bags and cell phone cases. All things to make any existing fan happy, and the makings of a more complete shopping experience for the customer already dedicated to the brand. If the bright color combinations from the Fall collection are anything to go by, there might be some pretty unique tennis bracelets on the horizon.

Richie Sambora is Livin’ On a Prayer with New Clothing Line http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/richie-sambora-is-livin-on-a-prayer-with-new-clothing-line http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/richie-sambora-is-livin-on-a-prayer-with-new-clothing-line#respond Thu, 24 Jun 2010 12:48:18 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=13410 White Trash Beautiful. Kind of sounds like a fraternity party theme or a phrase Ke$ha would use to describe her red carpet looks, no?

WTB is actually the name Richie Sambora, of rock and roll superstar band Bon Jovi, gave his new clothing line, which was recently reviewed by Vogue UK. The collection was designed in collaboration with Nikki Lund, who interned for Anna Sui and Jill Stuart in New York.

“We wanted to make something for strong, empowered women who are in touch with their soft, sensitive sides and who are comfortable with their femininity – who can also kick ass,” said Lund. Or, judging by some of the zipper placements, women who are comfortable with flashing a few roadies for a backstage pass.

The clothes were shown in March at L.A. fashion week, and a menswear line is in the works. Sambora has worn some of the WTB pieces on stage already and supposedly they have made a jacket for lead singer Jon Bon Jovi. {Fashionista}

As for the clothes – one of the dresses has a long train that does look like it could be made out of black trash bags. Perhaps the collection should have been called Trash Bag Beautiful.

The review? “Exactly what you would expect the lead guitarist of one of the world’s most famous rock ‘n’ roll bands to want women to wear: seductively revealing, often spray-on and always dramatic. Fabrics are leather, suede, silk, stretchy snake print and lots of elastane, while detailing focuses on zips – there’s even a zip-crotch leotard.” {Vogue UK}

Some of the pieces – particularly the jackets and vests, could actually work well paired with basics to tone them down a bit for a chic rock and roll look. The Glory Vest is pretty funky and cool and so are the Drifter and King Sport Jackets.

However, Sambora wants to dress Jennifer Anniston, aka the unofficial queen of understated California classy, in WTB clothing. Sorry, Richie; we don’t see that happening, but we still love you anyway.

Menswear Relaunch Marks a Return to Edun http://198.46.88.49/mens-style/mens-clothing/menswear-relaunch-marks-a-return-to-edun http://198.46.88.49/mens-style/mens-clothing/menswear-relaunch-marks-a-return-to-edun#respond Fri, 04 Jun 2010 18:04:35 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=12707 A capsule menswear collection by the socially-conscious fashion label Edun made its debut at Bloomingdale’s in New York Wednesday night with a party featuring DJs Tony Touch and Crazy Legs of the Rock Steady Crew, who showed off some break dancing moves at the event.

Edun founder Ali Hewson, who also happens to be the wife of U2 front man Bono, signed a deal with LVMH to merge the companies a year ago and since then has parted ways with former designer Rogan Gregory. The merger with LVMH brought more cash into the company, which resulted in the hiring of new creative director Sharon Wauchob. {Fashionista}

Hewson said Edun took some time to “ramp up the team, get the new collection out and start fresh” after signing on with LVMH.

Of the new menswear collection, she said she particularly likes the hemp suits and jackets for summer.

“I love that the clothes fit,” she said. “We’ve had some beautiful styles before but we’ve struggled with the fit. With the sourcing that we have now, the clothes are coming in fitting and just looking great.” {Stylelist}

The first Edun Pre-fall menswear collection with the Paris-based, Irish born Wauchob at the helm is the beginning of a few planned steps forward for the brand. Next week on June 9, Hewson and Barney’s Fashion Director Julie Gilhart will launch a Pre-fall “Grow to Sew” women’s collection at Barney’s. {Edun Live}

The collection is all about Africa, with t-shirts made on the continent and an African-themed launch event where guests will be able to have a member of the Edun design team customize t-shirts on the spot. All proceeds from t-shirt sales will go to the Conservation Cotton Initiative (CCI) in Uganda, an organic farming program created by Edun and the Wildlife Conservation Society to build sustainable farming communities.

The new women’s collection will also re-launch at Liberty of London and Merci in Paris later this month. Even more exciting: Wauchob’s designs for Edun are slated to appear on the New York runway this September. Can’t wait!

New Study Says Musclemen Aren’t as Appealing as They Think http://198.46.88.49/mens-style/new-study-says-musclemen-arent-as-appealing-as-they-think http://198.46.88.49/mens-style/new-study-says-musclemen-arent-as-appealing-as-they-think#respond Tue, 25 May 2010 20:09:02 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=12252

Here is some potentially good news in follow up to our recent post about the rise of anorexia in men with the advent of the skinny jean: muscular male models with serious washboard abs are no more appealing than average or chubby men in advertisements.

According to a new study, the truth is you don't need them!

Phillippa Diedrichs, the study leader, showed mock jeans, skin care and cologne ads featuring muscular and average men to more than 600 students in their late teens, and the ads with average men were rated no less effective than those with hard bodied men.

If young males are no more drawn to muscular types than average types, perhaps super skinny male mannequins and models will also prove no more alluring or likely to inspire men to be unhealthy.

The Sydney Morning Herald hopes the results will fuel the debate about unrealistic body types in media images.

Diedrichs said some of the participants in her study ”may have attributed the models’ muscularity to vanity or homosexuality, characteristics which they may have found unpleasant or discomforting…The average-size male models [may have seemed] less concerned with their appearance.” {The Sydney Morning Herald}

We think it might just mean that most men are not as concerned with their appearances as previously thought.

Some bloggers noted that for every study there is another that yields opposite results. For example, Deidrichs conducted a 2008 study that found plus size female models were no less effective in selling products than super thin models, but a University of Arizona study discovered plus size models in ads sold fewer products than skinny models, so maybe those concerned with manorexia shouldn’t get too excited just yet. {The Cut}

Our only concern with the results of this study is that the male students rated ads that showed just the product with no model to be most effective. This could show that men prefer not to see any image to which they are bound to compare themselves, meaning young males are still susceptible to body image issues after all.

Manorexia On the Rise With Skinny Jeans http://198.46.88.49/mens-style/manorexia-on-the-rise-with-skinny-jeans http://198.46.88.49/mens-style/manorexia-on-the-rise-with-skinny-jeans#comments Mon, 17 May 2010 20:21:05 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=11833 Much attention has been focused on metrosexual men and their manscaping ways in recent years, but a renewed interest in male grooming and body image comes with the introduction of an impossibly skinny, 27-inch waist male mannequin, dubbed “Homme Nouveau,” by British manufacturer Rootstein to make its debut next month. {New York Daily News}

The new 27" waist "Homme Nouveau" mannequins

This new size mannequin, which comes complete with a 35-in chest and not an ounce of discernible fat, along with metrosexuality could be causing some men to hold themselves to the kind of unrealistic body ideals women are subject to, and some men may be attempting to wither down to proportions capable of looking as good in trendy, super-tight clothing as the “Homme Nouveau” does.

Rootstein describes its new mannequin as, “the young and restless redresses the balance of the prevailing male beefcake figure by carving out a far more streamlined sinuous silhouette to match the edgier attitude of a new generation.” {NPR}

If by “edgier attitude” they mean tendency to develop eating disorders, statistics are beginning to show they may be right.

A look from Dior Homme during Hedi Slimanes tenure, where extra slim silhouettes were favored

GQ Style Editor Adam Rapaport says it is naïve to think men are all of a sudden more concerned with their appearance based on the “Saturday Night Fever,” hair sculpting, skinny pant-wearing days of the past (or Hedi Slimane’s slim Dior Homme silhouettes more recently), but evidence shows anorexia in men (read: manorexia) is on the rise, leading to the question of whether the skinny jeans for men trend may be at the root of it.

Today, 25 percent of eating disorder sufferers are men, up from 10 percent in 1990, and 40 percent of binge eaters are men. {New York Magazine}

Some experts cite the renewed pressure men are under to fit into slim clothes. American Apparel has a line of denim pants with a maximum waist size at 33 inches, though the average waist size for an American man in 2006 was 39.7 inches. In addition Rootstein’s mannequins have gradually shrunk in waist size over the years, beginning at 33 inches in 1967, down to 31 inches in 1983 and 28 inches in 1994.{New York Magazine}

“The body is on display more in men’s clothing today,” Radford University psychologist Dr. Tracy Cohn says. “The cuts aren’t as blousy and there is not as much fabric. Clothes cling to the body. The cuts are called close-fit or tailor-cut. And they taper into the body.”

Rapaport says it is not just jeans but everything in menswear that is skinnier these days including slim suits and skinny ties.

“Now it’s all skinny skinny skinny, whether you are or not,” he says, adding that the new generation is not smaller, they are just wearing clothes that are, moving away from the baggy, below-the-butt sagging pants that New York politicians abhor.

“Typically in fashion the pendulum swings,” Rapaport says. “If everyone’s wearing big baggy jeans, then the cool kids want to be wearing skinny tight jeans. Once everyone does something, the elite want to do the opposite.”

If you are a man uninterested in whittling down to 14-year-old boy proportions to fit into these clothes, Rapaport sees no need to be concerned. He admits most women probably do not like to see a man in something that super skinny. He also advises men to look at this trend as an extreme by which to be inspired – rather than which to aspire to – to wear clothes that simply fit better and are more tailored than what we are used to seeing men wear.

It’s interesting that this trend emerges just as attention is finally being focused on the inclusion of curvier women in modeling and a movement away from the scrawny female runway look. That being said, we definitely agree with Rapaport. Women do not necessarily want to see super skinny men in super tight clothing, but clothes that fit well are a huge step up from baggy, sagging looks that do nothing to flatter a man’s body.

Save or Splurge? Premium Denim from the Olsen Twins’ Label http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/save-or-splurge-premium-denim-from-the-olsen-twins-label http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/save-or-splurge-premium-denim-from-the-olsen-twins-label#respond Fri, 09 Apr 2010 14:10:19 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=10252 Over the last few months we have seen major fluctuations in the fashion retail market, with many labels finding the tough economic times too much to handle, forcing the ones who’ve been able to survive to lower prices or offer more mass market merchandise.

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen’s line, Elizabeth and James is rising to the occasion with a new 70’s inspired collection of denim under the name Textile. The jeans will retail between $235 and $245 at Intermix, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. {The Cut}

Like many other celebs (think Nicole Richie), The Olsen twins are finding success in their personal retail ventures and are now working to expand their multi-million dollar empire to incorporate the new collection.

In the fall, the Olsens will offer a full lifestyle collection for Textile. “We’re talking about the favorite things you want to wear with your jeans, like the ultimate flannel shirt. Elizabeth and James is a name the customers really relate to, to give them this other piece of their wardrobe, with the same brand, is an easy connect.” {Denimology}

We applaud the tenacity, but with denim lead brands like Rock & Republic filing for bankruptcy, and others like Chip & Pepper moving to licensing for survival, we’re not so sure if people are ready to move back to spending on denim with premium prices just yet.
