Retailers Are Watching You http://198.46.88.49/living/planning-to-return-your-new-years-eve-outift-january-1st-retailers-are-watching-you http://198.46.88.49/living/planning-to-return-your-new-years-eve-outift-january-1st-retailers-are-watching-you#respond Tue, 28 Dec 2010 03:47:18 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=17510

If you’re one of those people who likes to buy an item of clothing, wear it once, then return it to the store, beware: retailers are on to you, and they have now developed a way to track “wardrobers.”

Retail Equation is new software that allows stores to pinpoint “serial returners,” or those who practice what retailers call “wardrobing.” Retailers certainly needed this software, as stores lost an estimated $14.8 billion last year due to shoppers who brought back gently used items. {WSJ via The Cut}

We’ve all made the routine impulse buy that can’t be justified a few days later, but people who “wardrobe” on a regular, continual basis has to be beyond annoying for retailers. Anecdotally, we’ve always heard about serial returners who’ve received “thank you for your business, but don’t bring it here” letters, so the idea behind the software probably isn’t completely new.

The prospect of lessening this practice is not the only good news here, though: some stores are adopting more lenient return policies for shoppers who don’t push the return policy rules since they can now track “wardrobers.” Among them are Macy’s, Toys “R” Us, OfficeMax and Best Buy, which recently eliminated its unpopular 15 percent restocking fee. {WSJ}

It’s still not clear exactly how the software will work and what will be done to offenders (we vote for barring them from returning worn or used merchandise indefinitely) but hopefully there will be a way to distinguish repeat returners who are “wardrobing” from those who just happen to get a lot of misfit holiday gifts.

The situation is definitely a win-win for retailers, since studies have shown that consumers buy more when return policies are more relaxed and less risk exists in purchasing an item they are unsure about. {WSJ via The Cut}

Fashion’s Night Out: The Top 10 Events for Celeb Seekers http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/fashions-night-out-the-top-10-events-for-celeb-seekers http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/fashions-night-out-the-top-10-events-for-celeb-seekers#respond Thu, 19 Aug 2010 23:43:16 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=15201 Last year we covered Fashion’s Night Out from Paris, where we caught up with Carine Roitfeld, to London and New York. Each city was an overall success in terms of bringing out the shoppers, but the feel of each event was distinctly different. The Paris Fashion Celebration Night focused exclusively on the high end merchants along the Triangle D’Or (Golden Triangle – the area along Avenue Montaigne, George V and Champs-Elysées). Roitfeld made it clear that small and luxe was more in keeping with Paris Vogue’s reader, and this year has the same list of merchants. Aside from Vogue editors, who are fashion stars in their own right, there weren’t many big names tied to the events.

Allowing the clothes to be the stars of the evening certainly has its merits, but we’d be lying if we didn’t admit that we’re pretty excited about the madness that will surely accompany the more inclusive New York event. In Paris, there was champagne, cotton candy and chocolate fondue depending on which store you stopped at, but New York promises to pull out all the stops: celebrities, designers and shopping specials to go along with your champagne.

Still, everyone has a different shopping personality. An Olsen twin and throngs of fans waiting for an opportunity to meet their favorite designer might be a dream shopping trip for some, and an absolute nightmare for others. With that in mind, we’ve gone through the hundreds of events on the Fashion’s Night Out website so far and narrowed them down to the top 10 events by shopping personality. Today, we take a look at the must-attend events for those who like a bit of celebrity with their shopping. In the coming days, we’ll cover events for those who prefer something more low key, downtown style, fashion, fashion and more fashion and the girl who just wants to have fun.

The Starlet

Big and flashy is how you roll. If anyone asks “who are you wearing?” you’ve got a list of famous names on the tip of your tongue. Celebrities, designers and hundreds of adoring fans? You couldn’t come up with a better shopping scenario.

Madonna and Lourdes’ Material Girl is Almost Here, Promotions Ensue http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/madonna-and-lourdes-material-girl-is-almost-here-promotions-ensue http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/madonna-and-lourdes-material-girl-is-almost-here-promotions-ensue#respond Fri, 30 Jul 2010 14:24:42 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=14830

If you’ve been reading any fashion blog (this one included), you’ve heard about “Material Girl,” a fast-fashion juniors collection which Madonna and her daughter, Lourdes, collaborated on. The August 3rd debut at macys.com and 200 select Macy’s stores across the country is on track, and the retailer recently released more information on the supporting promo plans. Early bird shoppers who dress up in Madonna-wear at select stores will have a chance to win T-shirts autographed by Madonna between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Additionally, the first 200 shoppers at six Macy’s locations will win a “Material Girl” bandeau top and $10 off “Material Girl” purchases made that day. It doesn’t stop there: Madonna-inspired events will be hosted at select stores on launch day including afternoon Madonna music dance parties, more exclusive giveaways and refreshments. Finally, Taylor Momsen, recently announced as the muse and face of the “Material Girl” collection, will make an appearance at Macy’s Herald Square between 5 and 7 p.m. for a live acoustic performance in the juniors department. Fans who spend $50 on “Material Girl” wear will have the opportunity to take a photo with Momsen.

{Market Watch}

If this doesn’t do amazingly well, you certainly can’t blame a lack of promotion. We’re guessing on Tuesday the select Macy’s stores will be packed with teenagers who are fans of Lourdes and their moms who loved Madonna in the 80s. The cross-generation appeal actually makes the mother-daughter collaboration quite genius.

Executive Vice President of Marketing for Macy’s Martine Reardon said he expects the launch to create a whirlwind of enthusiasm.

“Madonna is a legendary fashion icon, and Lola has a great sense of style that reflects her global fashion view,” he said. “The national unveiling of this collection will be an incredibly exciting moment.” {Market Watch}

The apparel, shoes, handbags and jewelry for the collection will go for $12-$40. The ads featuring Momsen have popped up on the Internet, and we also caught a sneak peak at macys.com and from iVillage. It’s all very 80s Madonna (faux-leather pieces and lots of lace), with hints of the plaid shirts that popped up on the Music cover. If nothing else, petite adults looking to build a convincing 80’s Madonna Halloween costume should have an easy time at it this year. And of course, we’ll keep you updated on the most important detail – how the collection sells!

It’s summer and it’s hot, which means you have the perfect excuse to wear comfortable, flat sandals for work and play, but that doesn’t mean your footwear has to be unstylish or sloppy. From gladiator-inspired sandals to peep-toe ballet flats, the options are endless, and they afford you no excuse for worn-out flip flops, which doctors have said can cause more foot problems than high heels because of lack of support. {Forbes}

Not to worry! You won’t even want to wear those boring thongs once you check out these wear-anywhere flat styles at affordable prices:

These SM Luxe Cruzer Gladiator (top) sandals got a “Very Comfy” rating from users on DSW.com, where you can score a pair for $79.95, available in black and taupe. {DSW}

The peep toe of SM’s Penne Flat makes the style summery. $49.95 will get you a pair of bright, fun blue suede shoes.  Cheetah print, or basic neutrals like black, grey and taupe to match any outfit are also available. {DSW}

Dolce Vita’s Ontario Sandal for Macy’s is perfect for women with shorter legs because of its lack of ankle cuff, so the leg remains streamlined. They are available for $34.99 at macys.com in pink, dark silver, black and black leopard. {Macy’s}

A Day at the Beach: Little Black Dress of the Week http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/a-day-at-the-beach-little-black-dress-of-the-week http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/a-day-at-the-beach-little-black-dress-of-the-week#respond Mon, 19 Jul 2010 19:53:09 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=14248 With the summer, comes the beach. And with the beach comes the dilemma of finding a cover up that doesn’t look like a cover up. Let’s face it, most swimwear cover ups are not very versatile or flattering. Luckily, we’ve got a dress that can take you to the beach, then the supermarket, and that evening concert in the park.

Staring at Stars makes a cute little t-back dress in a faded black that is perfect for the beach. The fact that the color is bit faded means it won’t look to harsh in the bright sun of the beach, and the loose cut makes it casual and breezy. The subtle embroidery at the neckline sets it apart from your basic cover-ups. Paired with the Loop de Loop sandals by Reef in gold, this dress becomes casual enough for the beach but pulled together enough to wear elsewhere. To bring the look to evening, add a mixed media bracelet and bangles; the leather, sparkles and gold combine in an interesting manner to fancy up the dress while adding a bit of festival style. Top off the whole look with a skinny belt with rose buckle to add definition to the waist without detracting from the easy-going nature of the outfit.

Staring at Stars Embellish T-Back Dress in Black, Sizes XS-L, $68 {Urban Outfitters}

Reef Loop de Loop Sandal in Gold,  Whole Sizes 5-11, $33.17 {Endless}

Trio Twist Bracelet, $35 {Banana Republic}

Rachel Roy Goldtone Bangles, $38 {Macy’s}

Rose Buckle Skinny Belt in Apricot, Sizes S-L, $30 {Topshop}

Taylor Momsen is Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/taylor-momsen-is-madonnas-material-girl http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/taylor-momsen-is-madonnas-material-girl#respond Thu, 15 Jul 2010 17:03:12 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=14147 We told you about Madonna’s new clothing line dubbed ‘Material Girl’ hitting Macy’s shelves, and Signature9 UK filled you in on all of the campaign details. The juniors line targets feminine-but-edgy girls with a distinct punk rock style .

The face of the brand has remained hush hush until now. All we knew was that a young Hollywood starlet, who lives and breathes the essence of edgy was in Madonna’s sights. The ads are finished and courtesy of Macy’s it’s confirmed that Gossip Girl star Taylor Momsen is the face of the ‘Material Girl’ ad campaign. {Stylelist} No word yet on if this means underwear and stripper heels will be involved in the line.

Even though she’s moved on to Dolce & Gabbana, we love that Madonna’s not afraid to look back on her younger style. Her daughter Lourdes, who collaborates on the collection has, over the years, may be heavily influenced by old pictures (we’re betting that’s a family photo album a lot more exciting than ours), but has honed her own unique rocker fashion sense as well. In this case, a little fashion nepotism may not be so bad.

Proud Gleek? Celebrate the Emmy Nods With Macy’s New Glee Clothing Line http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/proud-gleek-celebrate-the-emmy-nods-with-macys-new-glee-clothing-line http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/proud-gleek-celebrate-the-emmy-nods-with-macys-new-glee-clothing-line#comments Fri, 09 Jul 2010 13:47:07 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=13901 The new hit Fox television show Glee is the most talked about and first-of-its-kind musical show to hit the airwaves. Yesterday, the show picked up a huge 19 Emmy nominations including Best Comedy Series,  Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Matthew Morrison, and Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Lea Michelle.

If you haven’t seen an episode or two yourself, the series capitalizes on the virtually untapped musical theater television market.

With all of the buzz surrounding Glee, Macy’s wasted no time collaborating on the overnight sensation to create a new clothing line. Macy’s has been really stepping up the collaborations recently with Madonna’s Material Girl line, and while Gleeks may not be as rabid as Twilight’s Twihards, the line is surely a smart move to further draw in a younger audience.  The screen-printed tee-shirts and hoodies range in price from $19.99 to $34.99 and will hit shelves this August. {Stylelist}

While the line is part of Macy’s push to up the cool factor with high school and college shoppers, Emma Pillsbury has picked up a few style fans who enjoy the J.Crew-esque bow blouses, cardigans and pencil skirts the fictional counselor wears. There’s even a blog – What Would Emma Pillsbury Wear?, that pits episode style choices against one another. With more than 1200 Facebook fans, perhaps we’ll even get some inspired womenswear pieces in the future.

Even if it’s only tees for now, the Emmys will be broadcast August 29th and the show returns in September. The timing for a bit of fan fashion couldn’t be better.

Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ Lineup Hits Shelves August 3rd http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/madonnas-material-girl-lineup-hits-shelves-august-3rd http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/madonnas-material-girl-lineup-hits-shelves-august-3rd#respond Mon, 05 Jul 2010 16:37:18 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=13715 Madonna’s new teenage-rocker inspired collection named ‘Material Girl’ is launching at Macy’s on August 3rd. The chains, leather fringes, studs and dark hues are  signature of  the ‘Material Girl’ image.

Madonna say’s the line stems from her own daughter, Lourdes’ personal style. Lourdes – sure to need only a single name like her mom, contributes heavily to the project. Most recently, she joined the style blogosphere, bringing back memories of another young blogger (Tavi) whose been making impressive writing and style moves of her own. {Fashionista} We don’t see any similarities between the two outside of age range, but there’s always room for another fashion blogger. While we’re pretty sure it’s someone from Macy’s behind the Twitter account, the brand is geared towards any 13-25 year olds hanging out there who weren’t born in time for the original 80s fashion wave.

WWD adds that a certain actress in a “teen drama series” who has a punk-rock personal image is the Madge’s first pick to model the collection. {Collegefashion}

Check out Signature9 UK for preview photos of the Material Girl collection, and a breakdown of everything you need to know about the campaign.

Cool, Cool Summer: 9 Breezy Summer Dresses Under $100 (Including Petite & Plus) http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/9-breezy-summer-dresses-under-100-including-petite-plus http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/9-breezy-summer-dresses-under-100-including-petite-plus#respond Sat, 26 Jun 2010 22:46:14 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=13475 Just in case 90 degree days don’t do it for you, we’ve rounded up 9 dresses under $100 which could easily find their way into rotation as summer favorites.

Summer Ruffles

While ruffles have certainly become a year-round look (thank J.Crew for that), there’s nothing like a few light folds of fabric blowing in the breeze to really make you feel like summer’s arrived.

Chambray tones down the romance, but keeps things light for Jump’s dress at a super affordable $19.99. Only Mediums are left, but for $20, it’s hard to complain. Volcom’s Jailbird dress is short and flirty – helpful if you’re keeping an eye out for your summer fling. Sizes X-Small through X-Large are available. LOFT’s Piped Silk Dress ups the ladylike details with a grosgrain ribbon at the waist, but makes things interesting by breaking up the sweet pink color with a black zipper in back that adds a structural quality that makes it look more expensive than its $89.50 price tag. Sizes 00-18 are available in the regular length, 2-16 is available in Petites.
