Katy Perry – Signature9 http://198.46.88.49 Lifestyle Intelligence Mon, 28 Mar 2011 16:54:12 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.3.4 Katy Perry’s Mother Shops a Book About Disappointment With Katy Perry’s Style http://198.46.88.49/style/katy-perrys-mother-shops-a-book-about-disappointment-with-katy-perrys-style http://198.46.88.49/style/katy-perrys-mother-shops-a-book-about-disappointment-with-katy-perrys-style#respond Mon, 28 Mar 2011 15:48:52 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=19232 Goodness knows Katy Perry’s style makes us raise an eyebrow, but it’s typically because of the kitsch factor. Apparently, Katy Perry’s mother has raised her eyebrow at the singer’s style, but for more motherly reasons. {Styleite}

“Katy stepped out from behind the changing doors in a tiny risqué costume. No mother wants to see the top of her daughter’s boobs . . . My first instinct was to order her back behind those doors and demand she put something else on . . . However, I had no problem letting my eyebrows say what I wouldn’t allow my mouth to utter,” says Mary Perry Hudson in her book proposal.

Hudson and her husband are evangelical Christian preachers, so it’s not that surprising that they’re not on the same page as Perry when it comes to styling choices, but does this really warrant a book?

Family members riding on the coattails of famous relatives certainly isn’t a new trend, neither are proposals for tell all tales from people close to the celebs hoping to make a buck. Frankly, though we’re sometimes disappointed in Katy Perry’s clothing choices as well (for entirely different reasons), shopping an entire book on the disappointment in your child because of what they wear and the fact that it doesn’t match with the family business is tackier than anything we’ve ever seen Perry wear.

2010 Fashion: The Year In Review http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/2010-fashion-the-year-in-review http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/2010-fashion-the-year-in-review#respond Tue, 14 Dec 2010 18:31:52 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=17182 Style.com’s Year in Style mash-up of all that was seen and heard from the fashion world in 2010 is out, and it includes everything from personal style scene-stealers like Lady Gaga and Anna Dello Russo to digital fashion endeavors and movers and shakers like Terry Richardson and James Franco. The fashion Web site’s review is pretty complete, but we would like to put our two cents in on what was important this year in fashion. Here, we present our take on the year’s hits that Style.com left out or paid too little attention to (and a few fashion misses as well) in Signature9’s 2010 fashion wrap-up.

Alexander McQueen Moves Forward

Goodbye Mr. McQueen, hello Ms. Burton. Long live McQueen.

Style.com covered the passing of Alexander McQueen and the showing of the final collection he designed, but something that was equally important this year was the success of Sarah Burton’s first show as the new designer for the McQueen label. The passing of such a genius creative mind was indeed tragic, and the showing of McQueen’s last collection was a special moment, but Burton’s signal that the brand can honor McQueen’s legacy while moving forward was absolutely stellar.

John Galliano’s Dior Couture Wows

Dior haute couture was in full bloom this year when John Galliano showed his Spring 2011 collection of flower-inspired looks. The imagery and execution of the designs combined with the high, tulip-like hair of the models for a full package display of gorgeousness and perhaps our favorite moment in fashion of 2010.

Why Lady Gaga Has Enormous Fashion Influence http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/why-lady-gaga-has-enormous-fashion-influence http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/why-lady-gaga-has-enormous-fashion-influence#comments Wed, 10 Nov 2010 19:40:57 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=16637 If you were wondering just how big Lady Gaga’s influence is in terms of fashion trends, we’re here to tell you it is officially huge.

Gaga is very well-known for her avoidance of pants. This past Sunday night, scores of Hollywood stars gathered at the MTV Europe Awards, and here’s a scorecard of how many celebs took a lesson from the Lady and went pants-less at some point during the event:

Katy Perry, who sported a white leotard for her performance of Firework, Eva Longoria two separate times as host of the show, Miley Cyrus while performing Who Owns My Heart, Ke$ha on the red carpet and Taylor Momsen also on the red carpet (who, whether she realized it or not, actually ripped right off Gaga with an underwear beneath a coat and boots look). Plus, Longoria also dressed as a ham at one point, though her costume was not actually made of raw meat. {The Cut}

Quite a list, no? Now you might argue that Gaga did not actually start the pants-less thing since Cher has been known to go without them and even Madonna rocked a few leotard looks in her day, but these stars never really seemed to inspire as many others to take on the look too.

With winter fast approaching, we’re not sure how popular the no pants movement will be in the mass market. As far as celebrity fashion though, Lady Gaga’s definitely setting the trends.

Katy Perry May Be Next Up to Collaborate With Steve Madden http://198.46.88.49/style/shoes/katy-perry-may-be-next-up-to-collaborate-with-steve-madden http://198.46.88.49/style/shoes/katy-perry-may-be-next-up-to-collaborate-with-steve-madden#respond Wed, 13 Oct 2010 17:58:24 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=16238

Steve Madden has been working hard lately. We recently reported his collaboration on Zac Posen’s moderately-priced Z-Spoke line, and it seems he has his sights on a new venture with pop star Katy Perry. Although she may have been dubbed too sexy for Sesame Street, it seems Steve thinks she is just the right fit for Seventh Avenue.

Known for her outrageous and buzzworthy sense of style it comes as no surprise that Madden has reportedly approached the singer with a proposition to collaborate on a “creative fashion collection” {Second City Style}.

Madden has also come to Betsey Johnson’s rescue after the designer suffered financial hardships. He generously loaned her the funds to get out of debt, leaving the Betsey Johnson empire basically under Madden’s control. This begs the question, is is possible that Perry’s crazy fashion sense will translate into the Betsey brand as well?

“Steve Madden is not taking over the company, and Betsey Johnson is not leaving the company,” Jonathan Friedman, Betsey Johnson’s executive vice president and chief operating and financial officer, told Page Six. {New York Post}

Either way, it’s a match that makes sense. Katy’s kitschy, colorful style (think Candyland figure youthful and brazenly bright) would compliment for Betsey Johnson, or add a bit of teen style to Madden’s own line. We can’t wait to see what the duo come up with.

Branded Nail Art and Katy Perry’s VMAs Manicure: If Everyone Jumped http://198.46.88.49/style/beauty/branded-nail-art-and-katy-perrys-vmas-manicure-if-everyone-jumped http://198.46.88.49/style/beauty/branded-nail-art-and-katy-perrys-vmas-manicure-if-everyone-jumped#respond Thu, 16 Sep 2010 13:33:49 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=15927 Enough about Katy Perry’s one-sleeved, drawn-on tattoo, Olympic figure skater, Bjork swan dress-like ensemble (is it bad if we kind of dig it?) from Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards. Let’s talk about the far more interesting thing she wore to everyone’s favorite train wreck of an awards show: her fiancée.

That’s right folks! Perry had images of funnyman beau Russell Brand’s face painted on her finger nails for the occasion. {E! Online} She told Ellen DeGeneres in a post-show interview that she did it because he could not attend the VMAs with her since he was shooting an upcoming movie in New York.

What do you think? Awwwww! Or Whaaaaaaat?

We weren’t sure what to make of it, but Ms. Teenage Dream (and Rolling Stone’s September cover girl) did cause us to wonder what else you could have painted on your nails if you really wanted an original manicure.

Turns out the latest trends in nail art are a direct reflection of a younger generation’s obsessions – specifically, technology and junk food.

It seems the newest in nail art is having the icon for your favorite Internet browser painted on. Apparently blogger Mamipeko decided to request browser icons be painted on her nails, and the manicurist she went to delivered, using a nude polish as a base and detailing the icons for Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari and Opera. {Walyou}

Considering the information generation’s obsession with technology and the Web, we figure it’s not unlikely that this idea will catch on, especially since news has spread through the blogosphere. Many others have already followed suit, requesting the Apple icon, Super Mario Brothers images and the Twitter bird as part of their manicures. {Walyou}

This could take the "I'm a PC" thing in a completely new direction

And if you think that is crazy, get this: photos of a set of manicured nails painted with the logos for various snacks and sodas have been circulating the blogosphere of late as well. You can brand your hands with Doritos, Oreos, Goldfish, Mountain Dew and Dr. Pepper if you so choose. {the gloss}

Since much has been made of the importance of appealing to generation Y for any business to remain relevant into the future, we can’t really say technology and junk food nail art is such a bad idea. And compared to Lindsay Lohan’s manicure meltdown, the latest nail expressions are pretty harmless. Besides being obsessed with snacks and the Internet, the current younger generation does seem to be particularly inclined toward wearing T-shirts, handbags, sweatpants and other apparel with brand logos plastered across them, which is another point in this type of manicure’s favor. We can, however, point out that if you are a grown, respectable woman this is one trend to highly consider skipping. Unless of course you’re Katy Perry.

Spotted: Justin Bieber for Proactiv http://198.46.88.49/style/beauty/spotted-justin-bieber-for-proactiv http://198.46.88.49/style/beauty/spotted-justin-bieber-for-proactiv#respond Tue, 10 Aug 2010 20:25:43 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=15083 It’s been a big week for Justin Bieber. The teen pop star raked in top honors in four categories Monday night at the Teen Choice Awards, followed Tuesday by an announcement that he will be the newest spokesperson for Proactiv. {New York Daily News}

Would you buy acne treatments from this face? Proactiv is betting you will.

Bieber joins Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Rolling Stone’s September cover girl Katy Perry among other Hollywood types that have served as celebrity faces for the brand’s acne-fighting products.

Greg Renker, who founded the company that markets Proactiv, told People magazine he is confident in Bieber’s potential to bring more attention to the brand.

“Justin has millions of fans of all ages and followers online where our consumers spend a lot of their time,” he said.

Indeed Bieber may be the perfect spokesperson for Proactive since he has a primarily teenaged audience and is a teenager himself. Perhaps young guys and girls at a tough age skin-wise will relate more to a 16-year-old star who not only appeals to them but can be seen as going through similar skin problems. The only thing we wonder about is if the smooth, baby-faced singing phenomenon has ever even had a pimple that required Proactiv’s products. Let’s be honest, most of the celebrity “before” shots are of  a single bump that has to be magnified 10 times to be seen in the first place. Not exactly raging, out of control acne, but we won’t underestimate the power of Bieber when it comes to swaying teenagers. Undoubtedly, even similarly smooth skinned fans will be hoping  for their first spot to feel connected to the pop star, but we’re sure that’s exactly what Proactiv is banking on.

You can check out images from the ad campaign as well as a video featuring Bieber here.

Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez and Kate Moss: A Look at This Year’s September Cover Girls http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/a-look-at-this-years-september-cover-girls http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/a-look-at-this-years-september-cover-girls#respond Wed, 04 Aug 2010 18:25:19 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=14937 September magazine covers were revealed this week. Three noteworthy ones: Rolling Stone, British Vogue and Glamour.

Katy Perry graces the cover of Rolling Stone for September, and to be honest the photo almost doesn’t even look like her. Not to mention she’s making a slightly snobby face. We don’t really like it, and The Cut pointed out that she looks uncharacteristically low-key. The Katy Perry we know and love floats around stages on giant banana props, sports light-up dresses down the red carpet and wears dresses with carousel skirts or watermelon rompers. The one on the cover is basically just boring in pink lingerie.

British Vogue chose Kate Moss as their September cover girl, marking her 30th cover for that magazine. It’s also her sixth time in the past 10 years appearing on British Vogue’s cover. {The Cut} They sure love her in the UK. She was photographed on a stool by Patrick Demarchelier wearing an army-style blazer, and she’s never looked better!

Finally, we come to Glamour, which chose Jennifer Lopez for their September cover. She looks fierce, and no where near her 41 years. {JustJared}

These three covers, however, are most noteworthy taken together. We have a singer, a model and an actress/entertainer. For all the buzz about celebrities vs. models, it would seem the balance between who gets the most covers is somewhat even, except that Kate Moss is very well-known outside of fashion. She may actually qualify as a celebrity, in which case it looks like stars reign supreme as cover ladies. What do you think of these three women for September?

Rihanna and Katy’s Primary Colored Hair: If Everyone Jumped… http://198.46.88.49/style/beauty/rihanna-and-katys-primary-hair-if-everyone-jumped http://198.46.88.49/style/beauty/rihanna-and-katys-primary-hair-if-everyone-jumped#respond Tue, 08 Jun 2010 01:48:47 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=12851 First it was pastel streaks that brought back memories of My Little Pony. Now, pop stars seem to be going full circle to bright, vibrant Manic Panic hues. Rihanna debuted a bright red bowl cut at a concert in Brazil, while buddy Katy Perry walked the MTV Movie Awards carpet with a royal blue Betty Page style.

At top, Lil' Kim's multi-colored hair from the Crush On You video (1997) and Nicki Minaj from a recent television appearance

And in a less friendly take on the style, Lil’ Kim, who made technicolor wigs popular with videos like Crush OnYou, has taken issue with rapper Nicki Minaj reviving the style without paying homage. {MTV}

So with technicolor hair making appearances at the top of the pop stars, and a possible war of the wigs brewing, would you give brighter hues a try this summer?
