And just as it does for glamazons on magazine covers, the right light can give your home an instant face lift too. Which is why changing up your lighting is a great, inexpensive way to spruce up your home.

We’re loving pendant lamps this season, so we’ve gathered a few of our very favorites that will keep your home in the swing of things. “Hang around” a while, why don’t ya? We have a feeling that once you’ve checked them out, you’ll be falling for these guys too.

SEE THROUGH IT

Glass pendant lamps are incredibly in right now, but the best part about them? Their versatility. Hang them in your office, your kitchen, even the bedroom – if you’re looking to give your home a touch of Modern sleekness or Rustic Chic, you couldn’t go wrong with any of these picks.

Clockwise, from top left: Dasia Lighting Pendants, $79-$99 on Ballard Designs; Arcadia Pendant Lamps, $80-$150 on Napa Style; Bulb Pendant Lamp by Sofie Refer, $175 on Unica Home; Firefly Pendant Lamp, $199 on CB2; Globe Pendant Lamp, $129 on West Elm; Berlin Pendant Lamp by Roost, $160 on Velocity.

A TOUCH OF TEXTURE

Never underestimate the power of white when it comes to your lighting. By toning down the color and amping up the texture, you’re sure to get a beautiful play of shadow and light in your home. It’s simple, classic, and always stunning.

Clockwise, from far left: Cambden White Mosaic Pendant Lamp, $70 on Bed Bath & Beyond; Phrena Pendant Lamp by Artecnica, $78 on Velocity; BOJA Pendant Lamp, $60 on IKEA; IKEA PS MASKROS Pendant Lamp, $90 on IKEA; Woven Pendant Lamp, $199 on West Elm.

GRAPHIC, CLASSIC, & COLORFUL

Of course, not every one cares to be understated when it comes to their lighting. And why should you? With fabulous prints and bold colors, any of these lamp shades would bring instant drama to your home.

The Lighting’s On the Wall(paper) http://198.46.88.49/living/the-lightings-on-the-wallpaper http://198.46.88.49/living/the-lightings-on-the-wallpaper#respond Mon, 02 Nov 2009 20:26:43 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=4936 Imagine if your wallpaper was like a giant, touchscreen remote for your house: touch a flower here and, voila, your lamp is on; rub a petal there and, hark, the sweet sounds of your iPod begin to play.

As crazy as it sounds, The Living Wall is just that. The “High-Low Tech Group” at MIT’s Media Lab, a group that aims to “democratize engineering” by designing technologies with low-tech materials, created The Living Wall with only paper and magnetic/conducive paints.

Not only is this the only interactive wallpaper we’ve ever seen (unless you count that tasty wallpaper in the Willy Wonka movie), it also happens to come in vivid colors and gorgeous patterns.

This is one practical paper that comes with a serious “wow” factor.

(2) A tea towel is a versatile item that can suit any and every personality type and decor. Have a classic kitchen? No, problem – check out the black and white pieces from Ferm Living. Decal Wall Stickers: Decor Under $250 http://198.46.88.49/living/home/decall-wall-stickers-decor-under-250 http://198.46.88.49/living/home/decall-wall-stickers-decor-under-250#respond Sat, 24 Oct 2009 00:49:30 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=3808 If you’re not afraid to go outside the box with your walls, but don’t have the cash for a large-scale paint/wall-paper remodel, then this newest trend is for you. Decal Wall Stickers are an easy way to add some punch, pizazz, or even whimsy to your walls on the cheap. Here are our picks for the best that stickers have to offer…

Hu2 Design offers stickers ranging from pretty and mainstream (see the Paris skyline to the left) to the delightfully out there (who wouldn’t want a toilet monster?) . Think wall stickers for the Urban Outfitters crowd.

gerbera

BLIK – a company that advertises themselves as selling “wall graphics for the commitment-phobic” has an incredible range of stickers. While they have a ton of quirky and kid inspired graphics, we’re really digging their simpler designs – like their funky headboards or the Gerber daisy featured left.

Ferm Living stickers, classy monotone creations, are the kind of stickers you’d expect to find in an airy Paris loft. Pricier than our other two picks, Ferm Living is for the minimalist designer who wants to add some visual interest to their otherwise blank walls.

This is Going to Get Trashy http://198.46.88.49/living/home/vipp-celebrity-trash-cans http://198.46.88.49/living/home/vipp-celebrity-trash-cans#respond Sat, 17 Oct 2009 01:38:26 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=3131 Vipp Trash Cans

If you’ve ever wanted to get down and dirty with Yoko Ono, now’s your chance. Well, not exactly, but you can make a great decor addition with custom designed trash cans by the likes of Ono, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Tyra Banks’ favorite noted fashion photog, Nigel Barker, in your kitchen corner. Initiated by Danish design house, Vipp, in celebration of their 70th anniversary, the one-off designs will be auctioned off to benefit DIFFA-Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS.

Normally retailing from $249 to $469, bids on the bins will start at $500 with all proceeds going to DIFFA. For those in New York, the project provides the added benefit of being able to waltz into a showroom in SoHo and see a fellow bidder inspect a can, only to see it talk back, saying: “I love trash, but you are testing my limits”.

Lucky for you, Design*Sponge has come up with a fascinating history lesson and guide to help you bring the sumptuousness of 18th century France into your own home. The bottom line? Despite the fact that everyone and their cousin seem capable of having a reality show these days, we never thought that a retail store would make one – or that we’d actually want to watch it. Man Shops Globe, which airs on Wednesday night at 10pm on the Sundance Channel, follows the trials and tribulations of Keith Johnson, the man who travels the world searching for the unique and unusual items that make it into Anthropologie stores. Beyond the fact that we love Anthropologie’s quirky decor, we also love the gorgeous locales of the show’s first episodes – France, South Africa, and Turkey.  Sounds like a winning combination!

Moss You Want On Your Walls http://198.46.88.49/living/home/moss-you-want-on-your-walls http://198.46.88.49/living/home/moss-you-want-on-your-walls#respond Wed, 30 Sep 2009 17:07:11 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=1750

While moss is generally not something you want to find creeping up your walls, a Japanese group of architects and designers known as Nendo Studio has found a way to make moss into a veritable work of art. The group, which draws inspiration from the natural occurrences of everyday life (in this case, the moss-ridden banks of a nearby river), used dried moss to create an intricate, textural pattern reminiscent of wallpaper.  And while you may not be able to reproduce this look in your own home, you can bring home Nendo Studio’s unique and conceptual 1% line of products – it’s so unique, that only 100 pieces of each product exist in the world.

Interior Inspirations: Give Your Room a Theme Song http://198.46.88.49/living/home/interior-inspirations-give-your-room-a-theme-song http://198.46.88.49/living/home/interior-inspirations-give-your-room-a-theme-song#respond Wed, 30 Sep 2009 02:29:54 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=1598

Inspired by "Mushaboom" - Thigpen's Living Room

When Joy Thigpen, a stylist and photographer, got down to decorating her new home, she knew she wanted to create a space that was lighthearted, fun, and practically bursting with color. Then she found her muse. No, it wasn’t a pillow or a poster – it was a song. Feist’s quirky “Mushaboom” to be exact. We think that giving a room a theme song is a brilliant way to help you define the atmosphere/personality you want your room to evoke – plus, we’re now dying to see what a room inspired by Lady Gaga would look like. Sequins and leather, anyone?
