This year, however, a few stars showed up in looks that managed to provide such a distraction that we hardly paid attention to the performances. And not in a good way. In a WTF way.

First up, Natasha Bedingfield. The famous singer with a pocket full of sunshine was one of the lucky ones chosen to perform on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest, but she came on stage seemingly stuck in an American Pie moment, with her bangs permanently skewed up and to the left. {Glamour} The good news is Natasha’s long-sleeved LBD had the perfect amount of sparkle and her sheer black stockings were right on trend, but let’s hope the Silly Putty plastered bangs look doesn’t take hold like Lady Gaga’s affection for going pantsless did.

Next, Lil’ Wayne. The Young Money/Cash Money star performed for BET’s 106 & Park New Year’s Eve Party broadcast wearing Designer Jeremy Scott’s teddy bear sneakers created for Adidas’ Originals by Originals line {Sole Collector}. We truly appreciate Scott’s vision and creativity, and we especially admire his willingness to push boundaries, but boy do we hope men and women around the world don’t start wearing stuffed animals on their feet. Lil’ Wayne (who could’ve used a pair of SUBS in the back) can pull the look off, and the press Scott has received as a result of the sneakers’ appearance on NYE television has been unbelievable, but something tells us the ordinary guy or gal would just end up looking a little silly in teddy shoes. Scott’s winged Adidas sneakers, on the other hand, are really cool. You should go buy a pair.

Jeremy Scott's Adidas: Not sure about those on the left, no doubt about the style on the right.

We suppose odd, IEJ-worthy looks are a great way for celebrities to get some extra press once the NYE performance hype dies down, so we can’t totally blame Bedingfield and Lil’ Wayne for their off-beat looks. Just don’t go public with any of this, kids. These are two looks you should only try at home.

If Everyone Jumped: Turban-Topped Models and Celebrities, Oh My http://198.46.88.49/style/jewelry/if-everyone-jumped-turban-topped-models-and-celebrities-oh-my http://198.46.88.49/style/jewelry/if-everyone-jumped-turban-topped-models-and-celebrities-oh-my#respond Thu, 11 Nov 2010 20:42:04 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=16691

Salma Hayek and Kate Moss try to reignite the trend of glamorous turbans

If you’ve got grey hair but no money for a dye job, you’ve ever dreamed of channeling Erykah Badu, you have frequent bad hair days or you just really hate washing and or styling your hair, you can now take advantage of the latest hair trend.

This week, The New York Times declared the turban is having a moment as a completely fashionable hair accessory. Actually, The Times said the turban was never really out of style but has been lying dormant for a few years and is now making a quiet but forceful comeback. We don’t really recall a time when turbans were ever that huge of a fad. Headscarves or hair handkerchiefs, yes. Turbans, not so much.

In any case, it does seem that the turban has made a quiet emergence as all the rage on fashion runways and in celebrity circles. Jason Wu used black and cobalt turbans in his spring collection, and Vena Cava sent models down the runway in them for their own show, while Giorgio Armani used North African-inspired turbans in his most recent collection. In the celebrity corner of the ring, Solange Knowles wore a Roberto Cavalli scarf as a turban to the Tom Ford show, and Salma Hayek rocked a navy and white printed one to the Stella McCartney show in Paris. {NYTimes}

“People didn’t bite when Miuccia Prada showed them a few years ago,” stylist June Ambrose told the Times, “but since then, it’s caught on.”

This may be yet another trend that supermodel Kate Moss started, as she was spotted wearing a turban at the Met gala in May of last year.

The Times claims ordinary women are embracing the trend as well with ladies in turbans turning up on the Web site Streetpeeper.

When used in dark neutrals like navy, grey and black, the turban definitely adds a certain edge to runway shows, but we’re not sure how easy it actually is to pull off on the streets. It takes a high amount of confidence to wear a headpiece like this, but if you’re feeling it, by all means rock that turban.

Rihanna and Katy’s Primary Colored Hair: If Everyone Jumped… http://198.46.88.49/style/beauty/rihanna-and-katys-primary-hair-if-everyone-jumped http://198.46.88.49/style/beauty/rihanna-and-katys-primary-hair-if-everyone-jumped#respond Tue, 08 Jun 2010 01:48:47 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=12851 First it was pastel streaks that brought back memories of My Little Pony. Now, pop stars seem to be going full circle to bright, vibrant Manic Panic hues. Rihanna debuted a bright red bowl cut at a concert in Brazil, while buddy Katy Perry walked the MTV Movie Awards carpet with a royal blue Betty Page style.

At top, Lil' Kim's multi-colored hair from the Crush On You video (1997) and Nicki Minaj from a recent television appearance

And in a less friendly take on the style, Lil’ Kim, who made technicolor wigs popular with videos like Crush OnYou, has taken issue with rapper Nicki Minaj reviving the style without paying homage. {MTV}

So with technicolor hair making appearances at the top of the pop stars, and a possible war of the wigs brewing, would you give brighter hues a try this summer?

Ombré and dip-dying have been on again, off again trends on the runways for the past several seasons; this time they’re appearing not on silken dresses, but on silken tresses.

We think Katie Shillingford, above, totally rocks the look in a futuristic Fifth Element sort of way, but we’re unsure on how the trend will pan out for the rest of us.  Unless you’re daring and willing to let your hair dictate the rest of your wardrobe, we wouldn’t recommend asking your hairdresser for something quite so bold as hers.  More wearable (and office-appropriate), however, would be to softly blend your regrowth into the rest of your hair, so you get a loose, youthful, natural play of color.
