Named Lucy In Disguise (we love that!), the London-based store offers a stylish yet budget-friendly alternative for women seeking to easily update their looks.  “It’s about making fashion democratic,” Allen explains, “so [people] can go out and feel like a million dollars and it won’t cost them a million dollars.”

We think the idea is brilliant, and Lucy In Disguise seems like a smart, simple, and green way to extend the lives of our wardrobes.  Although we’re sad Lily is stepping away from music for the time being, we’re looking forward to Lucy — and crossing our fingers that she’ll be hopping over the pond sometime soon.

Lights, Camera… Tom Ford? http://198.46.88.49/living/lights-camera-tom-ford http://198.46.88.49/living/lights-camera-tom-ford#respond Thu, 03 Dec 2009 01:27:11 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=7441

Former Gucci/YSL creative director Tom Ford is known for bringing sexy back during the ’90s, but he’s well on his way to being recognized as a film director in his own right as well.

For his debut film A Single Man, which showcases the chops of acting giants Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, Ford receives great accolades from critics who perhaps weren’t expecting something so sensitive and beautifully poignant from the man who introduced cut-to-there velvet hip-huggers in the mid ’90s.  Publisher and Ford acquaintance Lisa Eisner states plainly that “when people think of Tom they think he has sex a million times a day” — an image which seems to contrast with that of serious filmmaker.

We’re pleased that Ford’s foray into cinema hasn’t turned into something gauche and lusty, and after learning more about A Single Man we certainly look forward to adding it to our [ever-growing] movie list.

Is “Style Savvy” A Nintendon’t? http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/is-style-savvy-a-nintendont http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/is-style-savvy-a-nintendont#comments Tue, 03 Nov 2009 18:54:40 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=5028 We’ve written before about how the video game world has tried to infiltrate the (seemingly unrelated) world of fashion, and today we look at CNET’s review of the Nintendo DS game Style Savvy, the latest attempt by the king of video games to break into a more fashion-minded demographic.

Style Savvy is a retail simulator game, with an emphasis on racking up points based on customer satisfaction.  The concept is simple enough and exhibits a moderate level of rather enjoyable gameplay, but CNET writer Scott Stein questions the game’s presumption that only girls will be interested in the game.

We agree with Stein’s unease, because fashion is not meant to be limited to only one group of people, and the idea that shopping and style are somehow “for girls only” is incredibly outdated and, frankly, insulting to the thousands of men who find fashion to be an important part of their personalities.

Fashion is not gender-specific, and we hope the rest of the world will soon understand that truth.
