Droid – Signature9 http://198.46.88.49 Lifestyle Intelligence Tue, 22 Jun 2010 18:58:13 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.3.4 Motorola Droid 2 is Almost Here, the Original Goes Free http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/motorola-droid-2-is-almost-here-the-original-goes-free http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/motorola-droid-2-is-almost-here-the-original-goes-free#respond Tue, 22 Jun 2010 18:58:13 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=13334 Tomorrow, Verizon and Motorola are expected to launch the Droid 2 and the Droid X is expected to emerge on July 2nd. On a side note: with so many “Droid” phones on Verizon, is it time to consider a different brand name to distinguish? Just a thought.

But back to the Droid, with the next generations expected to have twice the memory and twice the speed (thanks to a faster processor), there are lots of small changes that could make a big difference in performance. Physically, there won’t be much of a difference in the Droid and Droid 2 – the touch pad from the first version is replaced with arrow keys {Android and Me}, so is it worth the upgrade?

Well, the Droid X will lose the QWERTY keyboard, though for some users that may be a disadvantage. If you just can’t get the hang of a touchscreen and just want the power boost, there’s still a case to be made for waiting.

For one thing, until midnight tonight, you can get the original Droid completely free at Wirefly if you’re a new or existing customer. Click here and use the code WIREFLYMEMCARD18 to also get a free 2GB memory card. It may not be the latest model, but free still isn’t a bad price for a smartphone.

The second thing to consider is what will be rolling out around holiday time this year. For one, there’s the AT&T/TMobile Samsung Captivate, not to mention the clandestine Windows Phone 7 phones. While the Droid 2 or Droid X may be an improvement on the current Droid – many bloggers consider the Droid 2 to be the fastest Android phone so far, it doesn’t seem like it will take long for other smartphones to catch up or surpass the improvements. The Droid X, for example, will get an upgrade to the camera and include 720p HD video recording and Android 2.2, but those are things that other smartphones already have, or will have soon.

V CAST is Coming To Verizon Droid Phones on June 7th http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/v-cast-is-coming-to-verizon-droid-phones-on-june-7th http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/v-cast-is-coming-to-verizon-droid-phones-on-june-7th#comments Sun, 06 Jun 2010 10:19:16 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=12786 Verizon has been seeing well-deserved success with it’s Droid smartphones, so much so that sales and a screen shortage have been keeping the Droid Incredible unavailable essentially since it’s launch.  That’s been without Verizon’s special V CAST service which it puts on just about every other phone.

On Monday, June 7, that will change and Android users on Verizon will be able to enjoy the on-demand TV shows that other Verizon customers enjoy.  Of course, like other Verizon customers, Droid phone users will have to pay extra for V CAST.  The service will cost them $3 per day or $10 a month depending on how they wish to use the service, if at all.  {Electronista}

The networks on V CAST include Nickelodeon, Fox and NBC among others.  Verizon’s V CAST is advertising the upcoming FIFA World Cup, so if you happen to be a fan of Android devices and soccer, you’re in luck. Sprint is also offering the game to mobile users with it’s own service, Sprint TV.  Sprint TV is loaded into all Android phones from Sprint already, including the new EVO 4G.  Sprint TV is also a free option for customers, as opposed to Verizon’s paid V CAST. {Androinica}

Of course, it is a step up on both AT&T and T-Mobile, neither of whom have streaming video services for customers, let alone for Android phones.

It’s A Droid, It’s A Phone, It’s Superphone! http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/its-a-droid-its-a-phone-its-superphone http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/its-a-droid-its-a-phone-its-superphone#respond Wed, 06 Jan 2010 00:56:08 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=8580 Steve Jobs may very well be quivering in his boots – or, more likely, in his turtle neck – right about now.

Google announced to the world today what happens when they and HTC (a company that makes all those Android running smartphones) come together.

Answer? They make one sweet phone.

The Nexus One, Google's foray into the world of smartphones.

The Nexus One, Google's foray into the world of smartphones.

The Nexus One, publicly released today, is Google’s answer to the iPhone. This sleek piece of machinery doesn’t just look as sexy as the iPhone; it’s faster, lighter, and isn’t tethered to AT&T. You can buy the phone through T-Mobile for a discounted price ($180 with a 2 year contract) or unlocked at $530 – making the Nexus One slightly cheaper than most of its smartphone competitors.

Add into the mix the fact that it’s got a whole bunch of Google goodies (Google Mail, Maps) one touch away, cutting-edge software (Google Voice, Live Wallpaper), and some killer hardware (a 480 x 800 OLED capacitive touch screen and a 5 MegaPixel Camera) and you’ve got yourself a serious contender in the smartphone race.

This is the “it” phone of the moment (the one all those tech geeks and plugged-in multitaskers are practically slobbering over), but will the Nexus One appeal to the iPhone/App loving masses? Could it topple the house that Jobs built? Only time will tell.
