Christmas – Signature9 http://198.46.88.49 Lifestyle Intelligence Mon, 10 May 2010 08:41:09 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.3.4 Merry Christmas! Here’s Not a Nook. http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/merry-christmas-heres-not-a-nook http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/merry-christmas-heres-not-a-nook#respond Mon, 21 Dec 2009 16:50:14 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=8264 nook

Longer than The Lord of the Rings, more dramatic than The Odyssey, and more ridiculous than a two-day marathon of America’s Next Top Model, the saga of “The Nook” continues.

While Nook initially got great press from the Tech world – word is that the device is superior to Sony’s eReader and even Amazon’s Kindle – Barnes & Noble has seriously messed up their competitive edge by not producing enough Nooks to meet the demand.

With the deficiency (which B&N maintains is due to shipping problems…but no one’s believing that one), there’s a chance you may not get your Nook by Christmas – even if you pre-ordered and were given a pre-holiday shipping date.

To soften the blow, B&N is offering $100 gift certificates and fancy “Your Nook Will Be Here Soon” Cards for those whose Nooks won’t be under the tree for Christmas Day.

It’s a nice gesture – but will that be enough for B&N to recover from this disaster and take on the increasingly popular Kindle? Only time will tell.

White House/Green Christmas http://198.46.88.49/living/white-housegreen-christmas http://198.46.88.49/living/white-housegreen-christmas#respond Wed, 09 Dec 2009 02:42:08 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=7769 whitehouse-xmasLike many families trying to cut costs and think green this Christmas, the Obamas have decided to eschew the traditionally opulent decorations of White Houses past and go for a subtle, stylish look this Christmas season.

Instead of ordering mass quantities of ornaments and trees to deck the White House halls, the First Lady decided to dig around the Presidential basement, re-use the 800 or so ornaments from previous administrations, have 60 community groups bedazzle them with local flavor, and then decorate according to the theme: “Reflect. Rejoice. Renew.”

While you may not have 800 ornaments in your basement (at least, we hope you don’t), this holiday season is the perfect time to take a leaf from the First Family’s book and “renew” and recycle your old decor – all in the name of good taste and green living, of course!

Heathrow Airport has unveiled the world’s largest sprig of mistletoe, a ten foot by eight foot structure that took three weeks to make, at  Terminal 5. But, should your Terminal of travel not be the sparkly new #5, don’t fear! Heathrow is looking to create three more sprigs of Christmas spirit for Terminals 1, 3, and 4 – all of which will hang throughout December.

Heathrow is hoping to have two million Christmas kisses under their mistletoes – so pack your bags and your lip gloss and get going already!

 1. Buy eco-friendly gifts: If you need inspiration, let us suggest the gift guides on Inhabitat and Green Your Decor.

2. Make your Christmas tree green: Buy a living tree and use energy-efficient lighting.

4. Get crafty and make your own gifts, or forego gifts entirely: We suggest buying a charitable donation in your gift recipient’s name – it’s a great idea for a green, do-good gift.

Is “Style Savvy” A Nintendon’t? http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/is-style-savvy-a-nintendont http://198.46.88.49/electrotech/is-style-savvy-a-nintendont#comments Tue, 03 Nov 2009 18:54:40 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=5028 We’ve written before about how the video game world has tried to infiltrate the (seemingly unrelated) world of fashion, and today we look at CNET’s review of the Nintendo DS game Style Savvy, the latest attempt by the king of video games to break into a more fashion-minded demographic.

Style Savvy is a retail simulator game, with an emphasis on racking up points based on customer satisfaction.  The concept is simple enough and exhibits a moderate level of rather enjoyable gameplay, but CNET writer Scott Stein questions the game’s presumption that only girls will be interested in the game.

We agree with Stein’s unease, because fashion is not meant to be limited to only one group of people, and the idea that shopping and style are somehow “for girls only” is incredibly outdated and, frankly, insulting to the thousands of men who find fashion to be an important part of their personalities.

Fashion is not gender-specific, and we hope the rest of the world will soon understand that truth.
