After the opening of his first cafe  in Milan, serving up spiked hot chocolate to its elite clientele  and debuting a new bookstore in downtown Manhattan called Bookmarc, it is clear that Marc Jacobs, once solely known for his fashion genius,  has conquered new areas in the retail market.

The original cafe is located in the Brera Distract in Milan directly behind the Marc by Marc Jacobs retail store. Neon lights and futuristic decor set it apart from competitors.

Cafe number two is slated to open on this side of the Atlantic, more specifically in uptown Manhattan.  MJ’s business partner, Robert Duffy confirmed the plan is in the works and hinted at its uptown locale.

It is noted that there are no Marc Jacobs boutiques uptown so it’s possible they may follow not far behind. Considering the success of mega-designers like Giorgio Armani and Ralph Lauren are partially due to successes outside of fashion, branching out into new markets is a good sign for a designer like Jacobs whose aesthetic and charm make him so versatile in style choice. Even though a home collection is the usual expansion route, we’re looking forward to seeing Jacobs’ design vision expanded – whether it be the coffee shop or the fashion runway. {Racked}

Will the Marc Jacobs name be enough to make you consider a change in your normal coffee provider? If so, what venture do you want to see the growing MJ empire take on next?

Marc Jacobs Goes Grade School Chic http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/marc-jacobs-goes-grade-school-chic http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/marc-jacobs-goes-grade-school-chic#respond Thu, 13 May 2010 20:03:03 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=11591 A sneak peak of some of the products that will presumably land on shelves in Marc Jacobs’ imminent bookstore on Bleecker Street in New York’s West Village has wormed its way into the Marc by Marc Jacobs Accessories Shop, also on Bleecker Street. {The Cut}

A few Bookmarc products spotted among the usual belts, T-shirts and key chains sold in the Accessories Shop included colored pencils, book covers and pencil cases. Photos of Bookmarc colored pencils were posted by twitter users (@psimadethis) who had the chance to visit the shop last weekend. {Racked NY}

It seems Mr. Jacobs is out to turn fashion-minded grade school goers into the chicest of their classmates.

Due to open this winter, Marc Jacobs’ bookstore at 400 Bleecker will replace the renamed and relocated Biography Book Shop, which had occupied the space for 20 years. It will be his sixth Bleecker Street location, but signs on the shop windows make no mention of Marc Jacobs, with only the words, “A bookstore will be opening here Winter 2010,” prompting speculation that the store is attempting to pose as an indie establishment.{Racked NY} And if you can’t wait until then, Racked is giving away the colored pencils, notebook and other supplies pictured above to one fan who submits the most popular drawing of Jacobs to the Racked Facebook page.

We can’t help but admit the Bookmarc brand name is attractively clever, but whether any actual books – and what kind – will appear on the shelves is yet to be seen. {The Cut}
