The illustrations were commissioned for the magazine’s feature on the 10 Most Intriguing People In Fashion, and includes everyone from androgynous supermodel Andre Pejic to embattled American Apparel boss Dov Charney, with a few of the usual suspects (Anna Wintour, Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen) included for good measure.

Full sized versions of each illustration are available at Meets Obsession. All illustrations by Yiying Lu.

Fashion’s Night Out: The Top 10 Events for Celeb Seekers http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/fashions-night-out-the-top-10-events-for-celeb-seekers http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/fashions-night-out-the-top-10-events-for-celeb-seekers#respond Thu, 19 Aug 2010 23:43:16 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=15201 Last year we covered Fashion’s Night Out from Paris, where we caught up with Carine Roitfeld, to London and New York. Each city was an overall success in terms of bringing out the shoppers, but the feel of each event was distinctly different. The Paris Fashion Celebration Night focused exclusively on the high end merchants along the Triangle D’Or (Golden Triangle – the area along Avenue Montaigne, George V and Champs-Elysées). Roitfeld made it clear that small and luxe was more in keeping with Paris Vogue’s reader, and this year has the same list of merchants. Aside from Vogue editors, who are fashion stars in their own right, there weren’t many big names tied to the events.

Allowing the clothes to be the stars of the evening certainly has its merits, but we’d be lying if we didn’t admit that we’re pretty excited about the madness that will surely accompany the more inclusive New York event. In Paris, there was champagne, cotton candy and chocolate fondue depending on which store you stopped at, but New York promises to pull out all the stops: celebrities, designers and shopping specials to go along with your champagne.

Still, everyone has a different shopping personality. An Olsen twin and throngs of fans waiting for an opportunity to meet their favorite designer might be a dream shopping trip for some, and an absolute nightmare for others. With that in mind, we’ve gone through the hundreds of events on the Fashion’s Night Out website so far and narrowed them down to the top 10 events by shopping personality. Today, we take a look at the must-attend events for those who like a bit of celebrity with their shopping. In the coming days, we’ll cover events for those who prefer something more low key, downtown style, fashion, fashion and more fashion and the girl who just wants to have fun.

The Starlet

Big and flashy is how you roll. If anyone asks “who are you wearing?” you’ve got a list of famous names on the tip of your tongue. Celebrities, designers and hundreds of adoring fans? You couldn’t come up with a better shopping scenario.

Olsen Twins Want to Grow Their Fashion Empire to a Lifestyle Empire http://198.46.88.49/living/home/olsen-twins-want-to-grow-their-fashion-empire-to-a-lifestyle-empire http://198.46.88.49/living/home/olsen-twins-want-to-grow-their-fashion-empire-to-a-lifestyle-empire#comments Sun, 16 May 2010 11:54:10 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=11800 Despite their hobo fashion style, the Olsen twins have the goal of spicing up home décor by including furniture in their Elizabeth and James, or JC Penney exclusive Olsenboye labels.

Before you roll your eyes,  we wouldn’t be too quick to judge – Ashley Olsen claims that it’s not about the celebrity status or the limelight. Ashley Olsen says the twins have tried to “downplay their status” from the start of critically lauded label, the Row.{the Cut}

It goes without saying that this isn’t the norm from a celebrity, but it seems authentic. Even though the furniture will probably fall into the category of too-trendy-for-your-wallet, the focus on design and undeniable brand strategies that have won a loyal following from an audience well outside of the Olsen twins’ demographic give us hope for the product.

What exactly would the offerings look like? Well, it’s pure concept at this point, but perhaps their (never lived in) penthouse gives a few indications. Their 6,000 square foot Manhattan apartment (pictured above) features lots of modern furniture and decor with clean lines and fluid shapes. And if you want to grab the apartment that comes with the furniture, it’s down from its original $12 million listing to the bargain price of $8.5 million.

The transition to a “lifestyle brand” comes on the heels of a recently announced premium denim line for Elizabeth and James, and the lower priced Olsenboye line that has featured collaborations with Steve Madden. They still have a few years to go, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see the Olsens at the helm of a style empire in the same category as brands like Ralph Lauren and Armani in a decade or two.

We like the idea of a mix of lifestyle elements (in case you couldn’t tell), and looking at the mega-brands in fashion that mix has been a key part of growth. Good thinking, Mary-Kate and Ashley.

As well, Nylon featured the look in a recent editorial (behind the scenes video here) but it’s Jack and Lazaro who get firsts on this look; they showed the pastel tresses in September.

This over-the-rainbow look’s best for blondes but still a can-do for brunettes. Will pastel pink and purple top your trends-to-try for tresses, or is it too preschool to be cool?

The Future Of Fashion Is…? http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/the-future-of-fashion-is http://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/the-future-of-fashion-is#respond Fri, 23 Oct 2009 03:17:10 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=3854

At last night’s “Future of Women’s Fashion” panel in New York City, editors Cindi Leive and Robin Givhan (fashion editors at Glamour and the Washington Post, respectively) and design voices Isaac Mizrahi and Ashley Olsen met in front of a varied audience to discuss several questions about the fashion industry: namely, why do so many people hate fashion so much, and what can be done to bring them in?

Among the night’s conclusions was the idea that, for fashion to survive, it must be seen no longer as something shallow and frivolous.  This means the industry can no longer “[coast] on trendy handbags and trendy shoes,” but rather must work from the inside out to offer intelligent, beautiful design that speaks to (and includes) a multitude of people — thus becoming something more democratic.  We say: let the fashion revolution begin.
