Supermarket tabloids and gossip columnists usually play it safe and give best dressed to stars who go with a cookie cutter gown, while worst dressed goes to anyone who takes a fashion risk. Fashion blogs normally go the other way, praising those who aren’t afraid to look more runway than red carpet, and applying a snooze label to those who play it too safe.

We haven’t found a measurable way to tally best and worst dressed just yet, so we’ll just just round up the larger trends and add our favorites to the mix. Click on images to view at a larger size.

Golden Globes 2011 Fashion Trends

Pretty in Pink and Red or Dead

Save: Julianne Moore in Lanvin, Julianna Margulies in vintage Yves Saint Laurent

Skip: January Jones in Versace

Don’t get us wrong, January Jones looks great and men probably got a lot more interested in the red carpet after seeing that dress; but the line between vamp and tramp is thin and we’re not sure how many women would be able to toe the line in this dress or any “inspired by” designs.

What They All Wore

1st row L to R: Julianne Moore (large image) in Lanvin, Claire Danes in Calvin Klein, Megan Fox in Armani Prive, Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta, Heidi Klum in Marc Jacobs

2nd row L to R: Naya Rivera, Natalie Portman in Viktor & Rolf, Emma Stone in Calvin Klein, January Jones (large image) in Versace

3rd row L to R:  Julianna Margulies in vintage Yves Saint Laurent, Christina Hendricks, Edie Falco in Valentino, Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang

This morning, the Golden Globes nominations for 2011 were announced by Josh Duamel, Blair Underwood and Katie Holmes; and with them the official start to the 2011 awards season. For film, the Golden Globes are seen as a predictor of Oscar success (at least nomination wise). For television? Well, there’s an open bar which normally makes for a pretty entertaining ceremony. Of course, we can’t forget the red carpet fashion, so without further ado here are the nominees who will probably be on the receiving end of some expensive designer swag next year.

Angelina Jolie Boards the Celebrity Design Train http://198.46.88.49/style/jewelry/angelina-jolie-boards-the-celebrity-design-train http://198.46.88.49/style/jewelry/angelina-jolie-boards-the-celebrity-design-train#respond Tue, 07 Dec 2010 21:02:06 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=17139 United Nations Goodwill Ambassador and A-list Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie is jumping on the celeb fashion designer bandwagon with her new line of jewelry.

On the red carpet at the premiere for her spy drama Salt, the actress can be seen wearing some the first pieces in the collection.

Collaborating with former Asprey CEO, Robert Procop, (whose decade-long design experience will serve as a backbone for Angie’s collection) the design duo will showcase classic jeweled pieces that Angelina will most likely wear herself. {FabSugar}

The exclusive collection won’t be sold traditionally in retail stores like most celebrity designs, however. Instead, her pieces will be sold through Procop’s clients with all of the proceeds going directly to Angelina’s charity, the Education Partnership of Children in Crisis.

It will be interesting to see how a collection from Angelina does. Though her photos regularly command millions – a gift passed along to her children – her stint as an ambassador for St. John wasn’t seen as being the best fit. With what we assume will be more input in the design process this time, maybe a more personal involvement will make a difference. Brand ambassadorships aside, Jolie’s woven a good dose of humanitarian roles into her bad-ass roles, and it’s nice to see her star power (doesn’t that always include a design stint?) directed to causes close to her heart.

Mary J. Blige Announces Charity Collaboration on Oprah http://198.46.88.49/style/beauty/mary-j-blige-announces-charity-collaboration-on-oprah http://198.46.88.49/style/beauty/mary-j-blige-announces-charity-collaboration-on-oprah#comments Tue, 13 Apr 2010 00:45:44 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=10354 The Oprah Winfrey Show has served as a platform for so many years allowing celebrities and everyday citizens to reach out to the public to support activism and charitable causes. In 2007 Mary J. Blige and music industry executive Steve Stoute founded FFAWN, the Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now, to help all women live up to their potential through scholarships, grants and programs. On Tuesday April 25th, Blige will appear on Oprah to announce her collaboration teaming FFAWN and Carol’s Daughter, a beauty company specializing in natural products, to help support women’s inner beauty.

“The partnership between Carol’s Daughter and FFAWN is a natural fit. In the true spirit of beauty by nature, Carol’s Daughter is proud to support FFAWN in their efforts to empower women and instill confidence. Like FFAWN, Carol’s Daughter believes that true beauty comes from within. With their genuinely natural products, they strive everyday to help women look and feel their most beautiful.” {Talking Makeup}

Oprah herself is no stranger to charity work and most celebrities aren’t either. Halle Berry, Alicia Keys, Shakira, Madonna, and of course the patron saint of charitable celebs, Angelina Jolie are only some of  the celebrities who vocally support charities through performances, products and other means that make use of their fame to help those in need. We think that if you can give, you should give and these celebs and other activists around the world are responsible for making life that much better for those in need. What’s your cause?
