If you’re not a parent of a small child, being an early bird/extreme night owl may not help you catch any deals that are of particular interest for Amazon’s Prime Day blowout. While the floodgates are set to open at 3am EST/12am PST, most of the earliest deals are heavy on the toy, crib and stroller category so those looking for any of the teased TV or tech deals can sleep a little longer.

With such heavy promotion, it’s not clear how long items will stay in stock, so do try to wake up as early as your interest allows. Check back for updates on worthwhile deals throughout the day.

Tech Deals

nikon-coolpix-p600-prime-day

7:50am PST/10:50am EST. This is when some of the teased (and in our humble opinion, most worthwhile) deals drop.

Among the not-too-early morning deals? More than 50% off the Nikon Coolpix P600 16.1MP camera, though it’s not specified if that’s off of the list price or the current Amazon price. Other worthwhile products with deals launching at this time are the Ausdom M05 Bluetooth Wireless Headphones, IMNEED Mini 3200mAh External Battery Charger and the Securifi Almond Long Range Touchscreen Wireless Router/Range Extender. While there are a handful of tech products launching earlier, they’re primarily phone cases, USB cords and other items that you shouldn’t lose sleep over.

Men’s Fashion & Style Deals

baume-mercier-8485-classima-prime-day

7:30am PST/10:50am EST. This Baume & Mercier 8485 Classima watch, currently priced at $1309, is slated for a 7:30am deal start time along with several other watches. Everything before are things you may need (underwear, socks), but nothing you’d want badly enough to justify an earlier wakeup.

Women’s Fashion & Style Deals

dior-womens-black-bezel-watch-prime-day

7:30am PST/10:50am EST. This women’s Dior watch, currently priced at $4895 (list price, $8900) is certainly worth keeping an eye on, as is this silver Baume & Mercier. While there are other nice enough jewelry items that make an earlier appearance, it looks like the deals to get excited about won’t be making an appearance until later in the day.

Food, Drink and Home Deals

Go back to sleep. Nothing earth shattering or early alarm setting to see here before 8am.

While modern offices may have lessened the need for tie tying skills and pocket squares, there comes a time when most men will have to go beyond the ill-fitting khakis that can be found in almost any corporate setting, or the t-shirt and hoodie uniform favored by the tech set.

CustomMade, a marketplace for – you guessed it – custom made wares ranging from art and furniture to clothing and jewelry, offers a detailed yet easy to follow guide for the times when the average working guy may need to not look the part. The bow-tie and tuxedo portions may not get regular use, but tips on fabric selection and shoe pairings are versatile enough to fit into an everyday wardrobe with ease.

Our favorite men’s belt alternative didn’t make it into the mix, but there’s always next time. Until then, check out advice on getting the perfect fit, in the ideal fabric, with dashing patterns and complimentary pairings for the occasions when a bit of style is required.

Netflix for Rolexes? The Latest Rental Companies Focus on Men’s Luxury http://198.46.88.49/?p=23711 http://198.46.88.49/?p=23711#respond Tue, 15 Apr 2014 01:48:56 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?post_type=clips&p=23711 eleven-james-watches

Watches from the Eleven James collection

Where Amazon grew bored with just dominating the book market, and quickly became the Amazon of everything from web storage to diapers, Netflix has largely been content to remain the Netflix of movies and television. While the rental model hasn’t been foolproof in all industries, Rent the Runway has done well as the Netflix of dresses, and ZipCar is zipping along as the Netflix of cars. One new entrant to the rental market  is giving guys a suit-based Rent the Runway counterpart, and another is focusing on watches that probably cost as much as the last ZipCar you drove.

Eleven James is furthest along, with a collection of luxury watches from brands like Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Panerai and Vacheron Constantin available for rental anywhere for 2 months at a time.  {Business Insider}Watches available to rent range in value from $7,000 to $50,000. While there are collection levels and an application process in place, there’s no mention on the Eleven James website of what level of membership grants access to the top tier of watches – or even what the most basic of memberships will run. In the fashion and accessories space, rentals are typically 25-33% of the retail cost of an item, so using the lowest pricing tier and the lowest percentage, it’s safe to assume that even entry level membership hovers somewhere in the four-digit range.

Still, with the dearth of websites of any kind offering luxury watches, it will be interesting to see if Eleven James can prove to the last luxury holdouts that the web is indeed a sales channel for them too.

Next up is NextSuit, which is yet to launch, but promises to offer members access to a suit at a time for $100 per month. {TechCrunch} Using the 25% rental rate guideline, men can expect a new (to them) $400 suit for the daily grind, or special occasions. While $40o isn’t super cheap, it’s nowhere near the high end of an off-the-rack men’s suit. At Nordstrom, a Dolce & Gabbana suit will set you back more than $2500, while options from Armani, John Varvatos and Canali hover right at or just below the $2k mark. At Neiman Marcus, $800 is roughly entry level for a suit (Versace, on sale, if you’re curious), while a top of the line Brioni goes for more than $5,000 and Kiton suits are on offer for a hair under $8,000.

NextSuit will likely have to expand their options if they hope to achieve Rent the Runway status; there, dress rentals start at days, rather than months, but also include higher ticket items at 10% of the retail price. The shorter time frame likely allows for more rentals, which in turn allows for a larger – and yes, more expensive – range of choices.

Studded Flag Chuck Taylors http://198.46.88.49/?p=23458 http://198.46.88.49/?p=23458#respond Mon, 29 Apr 2013 11:15:29 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?post_type=shopping&p=23458 stripes-studs-chucks

Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Studded Flag Well-Worn Hi, $64

You may have heard that the theme of this year’s Met Gala is Punk. Which seems a bit odd at first, considering the event is organized by Vogue editor Anna Wintour, whose standard look of sheath dresses and Chanel glasses  is way more prim & proper than punk.

Then you have the fact that Kanye West is rumored to be the performer, and Beyonce (she of the sparkly bodysuit nipples) one of the celebrity organizers. Both musicians have their rebellious moments; West, on multiple occasions, Beyonce’s “I’m not bubblegum pop” attitude of late telling other singers to Bow Down to her NSFW tromp l’oeil costumes. Still, even the risk takers are more fashion punk than OP (original punk).

We’ll bite though – while Wintour’s type of fashion doesn’t seem like the most likely pairing, movements have to evolve to stay alive. The fact that punk has lived long enough to become a point of inspiration for the unlikeliest of editors, to break into the unlikeliest places says something for the strength of the original idea.

Staple Paradise Pigeon Tee http://198.46.88.49/?p=23409 http://198.46.88.49/?p=23409#respond Thu, 25 Apr 2013 17:00:31 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?post_type=shopping&p=23409 staple-paradise-pigeon-tee

Staple Paradise Pigeon T-Shirt in White, $28

Pigeons don’t get the admiring glances of exotic birds, or elicit the type of admiration that eagles, falcons and large birds. Common to almost every major city around the world, pigeons are the Rodney Dangerfields of the bird world. Familiarity not only breeds contempt in this case, but  often even worse – indifference.

Which is why we really love this tee. An ordinary bird, on the most ordinary kind of t-shirt, but something different that reminds you there can be a something worth admiring in the everyday things that don’t often draw a second look.

A Look At the Business of Sneakers http://198.46.88.49/?p=22996 http://198.46.88.49/?p=22996#respond Mon, 04 Mar 2013 23:24:38 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?post_type=clips&p=22996 nike-paranorman-foamposite

The Nike Foamposite One Paranorman (pictured) have a low asking price of $1500, and go as high as $4500. At retail they sold for $220.

While women frequently take the rap for shoe obsessions, anyone who’s known a sneakerhead knows shoe worship regularly crosses gender lines. The Cut takes a look at teen sneakerheads who are finding the sneaker market more lucrative than the street market.

“Fueled by testosterone and a few lone moms handing out bagels and Capri Suns, attendees stormed a Best Western ballroom, dragging around trashbags full of shoes as dubstep blared from a D.J. booth. Wallets stuffed with fat rolls of $20 bills were taken out; shoes were swapped. It was Rick Ross–style hustling, only the PG-13 version.” {NYMag}

One 15-year-old seller, who also trades in flavored electronic cigarettes (at a much lower price) says mastering the sneaker market is “better money than selling weed.”

Indeed the Nike Foamposite One Paranorman Galaxy can be currently found on eBay for $2800, with asking prices on other sites as high as $4500. While the sneakers may be street, the nature of the trade borders on luxury, and not just for price. Originally retailing for $220, the markup is primarily based on limited original supply. Unlike Birkin bags and similar products that can generate waitlists to buy from brand controlled scarcity, the majority of the markups for sneakers take place in the secondary market.

Teens and under-25s may control the sell side of the market, but the guys who shell out  thousands for a pair of sneakers are likely the 30 and 40-somethings who once learned the art of the trade themselves 10 or 20 years ago. While some worry about the fad dying out, the men who redefine well-heeled tomorrow are more than likely the same boys selling to that crowd today.

Michael Bastian Talks Amish Influences and Dark Americana http://198.46.88.49/?p=22973 http://198.46.88.49/?p=22973#respond Wed, 27 Feb 2013 16:59:08 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?post_type=clips&p=22973

michael-bastian-mood-board

The moodboard for Michael Bastian’s Fall/Winter 2013 collection

Menswear often leans towards heritage and a designated color palette (black, gray, blue, brown or red in various levels of intensity), so it’s interesting to hear about the thought process that goes into a collection with the goal of pushing boundaries while maintaining wearability. While women’s fashion gets to exhibit creativity through colors, bold patterns and unusual fabrics, menswear has always been held to a more attainable standard.

“Let’s see how far we can keep pushing this American look without falling into the preppy trap. And you can go through this and say that the Fair Isle sweater is preppy, but we’re showing it in a different way.” – Menswear designer Michael Bastian to GQ

Of his most recent collection, which opened with a feathered vest, Bastian says “I still do that thing where if I wouldn’t wear it myself, even on my most confident day, it doesn’t go in the collection.”

Which all seems to be part of the designer’s push to continue pushing designs that are distinctly American (read: wearable, geared more towards the casual and active than buttoned up and perfectly polished), but not chained to heritage.

147 Beards Spotted At Capsule (And Other Such Numbers) http://198.46.88.49/?p=22758 http://198.46.88.49/?p=22758#respond Wed, 23 Jan 2013 07:19:41 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?post_type=clips&p=22758 capsule-trends

Capsule is one of the largest fashion tradeshows for menswear. Like most things that turn into “one of the largest ______” shows in any given category (CES) the number of vendors and new products to take in can become overwhelming. Luckily the guys at Kempt were on hand to give a totally unscientific, pseudo-scientific breakdown.

Since most brands show clothes that won’t be available for about six months—and because the show is enormous—we decided the best thing to do was break it down, using our patented scientific formula. {Kempt}

Our favorite observations? The count of bearded men in heritage denim lingering around as street style bait (147), the jacket (1) they considered “borrowing”, that we’d definitely “borrow” if we were friendly like that, and the tip off on “mill direct” (72 utterances) which seems poised to become the new “heritage” denim.

Fancy Jumps Into the Celeb Subscription Business With the A+ Box http://198.46.88.49/?p=22750 http://198.46.88.49/?p=22750#respond Tue, 22 Jan 2013 05:26:38 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?post_type=clips&p=22750 ashton-kutcher-fancy-box

Fancy is already known as Pinterest with a business plan, so their entry into the celebrity subscription market doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Ashton Kutcher’s big money may still come from acting, but his numerous angel investments in tech startups are well documented. So it really seems like it was only a matter of time before Kutcher lent his name to a Thing of the Month venture, and now that time is here.

The A+ Box is a $45/month (with a reported $90 value) box of goodies sent out each month. From preview pictures, the goods appear to be guy focused. 12Society‘s entire business model is based around the same idea (at a slightly lower price point of $39), with celebrity curators like Nas and Tim Lincecum.

It’s interesting to see the slight difference in subscription models by gender. ShoeDazzle and BeachMint, who both bet big on the celebrity backed subscription model, both used style surveys in an attempt to personalize monthly recommendations. 12Society and Fancy both seem to be banking on the premise that guys will go in a bit more blindly if the right name is attached.

Michael Phelps Takes a Bath for Louis Vuitton http://198.46.88.49/?p=22424 http://198.46.88.49/?p=22424#respond Tue, 14 Aug 2012 00:21:43 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?post_type=clips&p=22424

Louis Vuitton‘s latest poster boy is record setting Olympian Michael Phelps. In a campaign shot by Annie Liebovitz, who has been behind the lens for many of the luxury house’s Core Values ads, the 22-time Olympic medalist splashes around a bathtub next to a monogram canvas tote.

A questionably placed bubble that probably should have been airbrushed out also appears, and even for a swimmer it seems a bit odd to bathe in goggles, but whatever works for getting the gold.

And, of course, you no longer have to lay awake at night wondering about how Phelps’ medals get around.
